After using the M11 for the past week, I can say with confidence that Leica’s updates after the M9, while significant for some users, do not add to the pure rangefinder experience. Again just my opinion, and I’m totally fine with those who think differently, that’s why it’s great we have options that fit our needs..but for me, the M9 does everything a Leica camera needs to do, and does it beautifully. (And the M9M).

Live view = Why do people want LV or want to use EVF in an M is something that I just can’t wrap my head around since day 1.

File size = 18MP is perfect and super easy to work with in post

CCD = Closest rendering to film (set WB to Kelvin 5200 or so and you’ll get amazing results)

The M9 has the perfect weight, the perfect body design (no ‘thumb / dial bump’ in the back or unnecessary fn buttons, tiny screen with enough room to hold the camera, black paint), and everything you’d ever need from a digital M. In trying to catch up with the latest technology of competitors, the M further diverged from this essence, and although I still do think it’s an amazing camera (all the way from the M3 to the M11), my advice is if you have an M9, stick with it. No significant reason to ever upgrade from there, unless your camera breaks.

I never owned one, by I would say that Leica M-D and M10-D have the "purest rangefinder experience" of all digital Ms.
I like my M9 (still with the original sensor, keeping my fingers crossed), but I am looking for the best rangefinder experience, not the "purest."

The purest is Edition 60 that started it all.  It’s so pure it even has no strap lugs!  And stainless steel houses the most satisfying shutter sound in an M.  Like locking a projectile in a Seydlitz turret at Jutland when the HMS Queen Mary is in the rangefinder.

I loved my M9's. After 20+ years of shooting Canon I sold the lot for a pair of M9's and 4 CV lenses (Leica lenses were incredibly hard to get at the time). I shot those 2 cameas professionally for years until I upgraded to the M-P and latter M10. M9 M9's gave stellar results and fed me and my family.

I no longer have them and I no don't miss them. Hopefully they're still getting heavy use. That's what they're designed for. There were lots of compromises, biggest of which was the shutter re-cocking sound. Really not ideal in a church. And I was glad to have something less clunky so I could shoot a WATE than the Frankenfinder.

To me the purest digital M was the M10-D. Looked like an M6 and handled like one.  Quiet like a film M as well. But Like @SrMi I'm lookig for the best rangefinder experience, for me, not the purest one.

I still have my beautiful M-P though. SHould pull it out and give it a run.

Leica stripped it down to the bare bones, no cable release socket, no self-timer, the M240 grip will not fit.  There's nothing left not to love 🙂

Yup I feel the same way about my Ford model T , it was the purest vehicle experience I ever had. Who needs to go more then 20kmh anyhow. Forget all this new automobile experience I am sticking with my model T.

Totally fine with me if you choose whatever car you wanna choose (and camera). There's a reason why vintage cars (despite the lack of technology) exist in the market, and also a reason why some people still shoot film or cameras like the M9. Isn't it ok that some people don't need the latest technology to enjoy their hobby? As it's also ok that some people do want the latest as part of their hobby, that's ok too.

It’s all good buddy different strokes for different folks, my favourite film M was the M5. To me. the M4-2  was a step back from a perfect film camera. I personally like evolution, I like the way the M11 blends the best of the traditional M rangefinder with enough advanced features to give me the best quality IQ and experience of using a rangefinder with the best compact lenses on the planet.

Someone once pointed out that the really revolutionary Leica’s are the odd-numbered ones.  And this is surely true for the M3 (first M), M5 (love child of M and Leicaflex), M7 (first Auto metered M), M9 (first full-frame digital M), and now M11 (first Leica with no bottom plate)!

Interesting; in that sense, the M11 feels similar to the M5 right? It feels the M11 is kinda like a love child of M and SL, and also there's a significant body design change (not as radical as the M5 & this time around most people are happy about the bottom plate change, but still a significant one considering the 60+ years of history).

What was wrong with M9 rendering of red? Sold my M9 after 8 years, should have kept it!!!

Yes, I definitely see the similarities between the M5 and M11 (I like the M5, by the way, and would probably like the M11, too, from what I have heard and seen, but I am happy to hang back for a few more years yet).

By the way, only (half-)kidding about the baseplate being the only “revolutionary” feature the M11 brings to the table. 🙂

If I saw any rendering like that in the M11 thread, I'd be interested in getting one.

That’s not what the neighbors described, M was pretty drunk and SL kind of led her by the arm…

Hmmm... then can you please tell me why, when my 10-R and SL2 have had a year and half to do the deed, did I actually have to pay the $10K adoption fee to bring home little baby  M11?  Hell, I left them alone night after night, and mind you they were both in the bag, with not so much as even a memory card ever popping out.

The M9's ability to render reds was unique and quite stunning among cameras, to say the least. Looking at M9 photos always make me wonder why I'm not shooting it still. M10 is just so much more comfortable operationally, alas, and I can get close to the M9 look in post. What I've seen so far of the M11 looks even further away from the M9 than ever before.

About as close as I could find with the M10. Most others the red goes 'warm' and and a bit orangey. I think Leica did that to make skin tones better (not the M9's high point). I pulled the WB temp down just a bit on this.
