It’s been discussed and confirmed from multiple sources that the silver M11 bottom frame is not brass. These discussions are way back in some of the early M11 threads.
Kiwimac Posted January 1, 2023 Share #124 Posted January 1, 2023 (edited) It’s a shame that you can’t just order them in whatever finish/engraving you want. Admittedly they’d charge like a wounded bull for it, but it’s a shame that the option isn’t there. And what the flip is “leatherette”? A place you take leather to wash it? Harout62 Posted January 2, 2023 Share #126 Posted January 2, 2023 I really don’t understand what is the issue with the Aluminuim? If anything they should have made the chrome model with Aluminuim and the black with brass. The only advantage of using brass is the patina, and when the chrome patinas it looks horrible. Other then that the Aluminuim is lighter and it does not dent like brass.. I have had my black M11 since last January almost a year now, I Have used it almost every day and it does not have a single scratch or a blemish on it. Whatever the finish is it is very tough, and scuffs just wipe off with a damp cloth.

I think the biggest problem is that they didn’t. They just produced two versions, one of which is quite different to all that has gone before, but failed to take their customers on the journey explaining why the choices were made and what the benefits were. If they’d used “The same aluminium that is used in space launch vehicles” because “it’s half the weight of brass but 8 times tougher” and it was “coated with a finish developed to protect aluminium from corrosion in submarines” I suspect we’d all be feeling differently. Neither of which are half as interesting as the kind of things I used as an illustration.... What they did was break with the past in a way that was inadequately explained and, as a result, in danger of sounding like cost cutting and cheapening the iconic M. Had they explained it more as I suggested they would have got on better. For example, why choose aluminium and a questionable finish when they could have stuck with brass and just used black enamel paint if black chrome was "bad"? Is aluminium stronger or weaker than brass? There are a lot of questions they should have expected and headed off at the pass. Well I doubt there is a huge difference in the price of a pound of Aluminuim and a pound of brass to really account for any kind of cost saving. machining Aluminuim is about the same as brass as far as tooling goes, so not much in saving there. Aluminuim can be much stronger then brass such as 7000 series Aluminuim which is very strong. Now when it comes to finishing, it is rather much more expensive to paint Aluminuim as opposed to brass. So I doubt that they made the M11 in Aluminuim to save cost and give us less quality. I really think their reason was to give us an option of a lighter body, which I actually like very much. Unaware it was being released since I was busy trying to decide whether to keep my GFX system. After a year that has proved to be No and driven me back where I ought to have stayed, only to find out that the M10 had been superseded. Kiwimac Posted January 2, 2023 Share #139 Posted January 2, 2023 Curious to know if it was the same thing. I find asking people who know a useful way to find out. As my wife would tell you, I’m a cross between Sheldon Cooper and Mr Spock. I ask a lot of questions. Apologies if I shouldn’t have asked.
Antonio Russell Posted January 2, 2023 Share #140 Posted January 2, 2023 I have found the black version to be very hard wearing and durable. Not sure what paint they are using but it is far superior to that used on earlier Leicas.
