robb Posted January 7, 2022 Author Share #42 Posted January 7, 2022 This is my one main spot on the forum to highlight my experiences with Leica cameras and share the stories of behind the scenes. So I'll post images from other Leica models outside of the SL series but house them here since the SL2 and SL2-s will be my main focus moving forward. Great, sharp lens... robb Posted January 7, 2022 Author Share #43 Posted January 7, 2022 I am looking forward to shooting more of my M lenses on the SL cameras for their lighter weight and compact size in many cases. I have actually added two M adapters so I can quickly just swap two lenses with the SL lenses in the same bag without thinking too much about "not removing" the adapter, or "where it is"... A bit of an expense but worth it if you are not wanting to over think what is absolutely ready to go on the camera in quick moving situations. Robb The hardest part for me is I’m not quite ready to part with my Nikon gear as I have a need for the long glass (600 f/4) that’s not yet available for L-Mount. I am hoping that Sigma will introduce a L-Mount version of their 500 f/4 in the not too distant future. At the moment I’m thinking of the SL2 more for travel when I don’t need the long glass. It would be nice to pair with either my Q2 or M10-R. Decisions, decisions???
robb Posted January 10, 2022 Author Share #45 Posted January 10, 2022 (edited) In the garage today with my good friend and my brother. Had a look at my SL2 with the 50mm M asph. Not particularly impressed with this copy's sharpness. I borrowed from my buddy to try out. It had a ding on the side of the hood, so that may have caused an issue with the element alignment. I'll advise him to send it in for service to get it back to perfect. I could not get any razor sharp eyes or eyebrows wide open unlike. my zm 35 1.4 or m 90 apo. Color and tonal qualities were great. I'll shoot some other subject material at other distances and f-stops Monday to see if things improve. I'm also really not happy with the noise / grain at 3200 as I've said previously... Another quirk or bug I have noticed is that the focus peaking sometimes shows(in red) and sometimes fails to show even though nothing is changed other than turning the camera on / off even though it set to "on" in the function special settings. Cycling through the FN button with two profiles (even showing peaking on) fails to work. Leica ALWAYS has some bugs to work through. Not sure if others have seen this issue with intermittent focus peaking?... robb Posted January 11, 2022 Author Share #48 Posted January 11, 2022 Summicrons perfect size and handling. They updated with firmware as soon attached to body and turned on. 90-280 just like 70-200 2.8 zoom from canon or Nikon so not too bad. All fairly quiet. 90-280 has IS in lens which makes a little more noise. Focusing on all seemed quick enough. Will be worried my wedding ring will scratch up the metal on the barrel or tripod mount, but I guess they are tools that will patina with time. I’m planning on owning these a VERY long time. Will be curious to see difference between Leica SL 35 and Zeiss ZM 35 1.4 i have a feeling my m 90 apo might be getting less use. All 3 feel epic already after shots this afternoon… Robb 2
robb Posted January 11, 2022 Author Share #49 Posted January 11, 2022 I reset the SL2 camera settings and added my profiles back. Focus peaking is working again. Wonder if anyone else has had this problem with it working sometimes and sometimes not. Robb
robb Posted January 11, 2022 Author Share #50 Posted January 11, 2022 (edited) Out yesterday checking out sharpness with the new SL lenses. Tried a variety of f-stops from f 2.0 to 5.6 to 10.0 to get some motion blur with cars. Lenses are very sharp even wide open all the way out to the corners as most owners have previously said. But focus falloff happens quickly. I don't think I would shoot landscapes at f 2 if you were focussing closer than infinity... Sharpest spot for these seems to be f4 but I wouldn't hesitate to shoot at any f-stop really. These are not really portfolio shots but just something to verify that all is well prior to hitting the paid jobs later this week. My sensor is dirty again and I noticed dust spots showing up at f 5.6 in the sky that I had to fix a few in Lightroom. So I'll get to cleaning that later today. Waiting on some new polarizers for. the 67mm lenses. I would have preferred to shoot with those but it's always a process of getting the new gear lined up with all your normal pieces. I think iso 200 does seem to be ideal as to have less fuss with the images / highlights. I'd rather not shoot everything at 50 to only have to adjust every photo back up 1 to 2 stops. That processing would get tiresome. Will have to see if the DR and image quality is worth the fuss at 50/ 100 vs 200+. robb Posted January 11, 2022 Author Share #51 Posted January 11, 2022 At 5.6, I focussed on the mountain range. The car was still in focus. The cactus in foreground was out. But when I took this same shot at f2 and focussed on the car, the mountain range was out of focus, so it pays to really put these new lens designs in dif scenarios to understand what you will get way ahead of time. Only reason I would see shooting the summicrons at f 2 would be for people activities as the focus or portraits because focus drop off will be very quick. I think when I use these for landscapes, it will be stopped down. I will try some multi shots at 4, 5.6 and 8. I guess it can't be as simple that you have pressed the Fn button and changed the live view overlay (removing peaking)? Probably not but this happened to me when I first got the camera and hadn't yet figured out the interplay between User Profiles and display settings... Hope I don't insult 😃
robb Posted January 12, 2022 Author Share #53 Posted January 12, 2022 No, you’re good. I set the camera with only two function profiles as on - 1 and 2. 3 and 4 are completely off. In both, I turn the focus peaking on with only difference in showing grid and level. So I toggle back and forth between the two FN modes but sometimes even though the peaking is shown as “on”… nothing turns red at all showing focus. So somewhere along the way, the camera chooses to ignore the peaking. Lol
hoolyproductions Posted January 12, 2022 Share #54 Posted January 12, 2022 The only time I have seen something like that is when working in a *very* low light situation where the peaking cannot detect sufficient contrast anywhere...
robb Posted January 13, 2022 Author Share #55 Posted January 13, 2022 Out at the indoor range with a friend today shooting our CZ EVO Scorpions. Brought the SL2 and my 75 along with the SL 35 and ZM 35. I particularly wanted to see the main focus drop-off comparison between the 35's at f 1.4 and f2 up to f4. I'll post those next. The 75 is great for my normal portrait perspective. I think I would always shoot this focal length for people unless there was just not room...Here is the same image in B&W and Color. Colors looked great using Adobe Standard in Lightroom Classic. No saturation or vibrance added. I was worried about the neon yellow of the target but the color version wasn't too obnoxious. robb Posted January 13, 2022 Author Share #56 Posted January 13, 2022 Obviously the 35mm focal length is not as flattering than the previous image shot with the 75. I really like the ZM 35 1.4. The MF is easier to use and nail than SL lenses because of the SL having tighter rings even with variable throw. AF with SL was fine but I zoomed in to try to get the eye in focus behind the glasses. Slender Posted January 13, 2022 Share #59 Posted January 13, 2022 @robb EVF with Low light mode (can't remember exact Leica name) active will not display Focus Peaking, as the extra gain on the sensor would excite the peaking way too much.
