Help with image renumbering after firmware upgrade

After the last firmware upgrade my photos were renumbered.  I remember someone giving steps on how to prevent this but I can't find the post.  I need to upgrade to SL2 version 3 but I want to take the steps to prevent the renumbering. Can you help?  Thanks so much

Are you talking about reset numbers. There is an option when you reset. 
you can also change the “l” to something else.

firmware update didn’t show me any of this option in the process 

you should probably rename the files to something meaningful anyway on import

After processing the firmware update, formating your card. 
Then,  put back on it the last shot taken with the right numbering. 
Normally, the following numbers will be the right ones.
