So why would a lens designer choose to put the aperture that far forward? Does it allow correction due to diffraction by the diaphragm-blades at smaller apertures easier to achieve?

I think I still  have a volume on Optics & Lens Design kicking around. Perhaps it's time to track it down...

Philip.

BTW - product photos of the new Heliar Classic show that the aperture is, in fact. right up front, as in the 90mm Elmarit v.1 (first picture in second row)..

BTW - Danner - I notice that a Google image search for the "50 f/1.5 Classic Heliar" now includes your red/yellow/black checkerboard avatar - on about page 6. ;)

Ha!  And my High School counsellor said I'd never make anything of myself, LOLOL...

Thanks for the confirmation, Andy. Interesting choice!

So... who will be the hero and post an image of this great looking black lacquer lens on his black paint Leica M first?

I’m not sure why It would make me a hero but I can certainly  upload an image of mine on my MP when it arrives!    :D

Interesting how much the Heliar Classic "cosmetics" echo the old Olympus OM 50mms. Stubby, black and chrome rings, diamond-knurling.

I like that knurling a lot.  Old school, very effective, looks good.

Some new really crazy bokeh samples are are coming out of Germany for this lens !

https://www.voigtlaender.de/lenses/vm/50-mm-11-5-heliar-classic/?lang=en

The voigtlaender.de site is slow and the embedded image viewer a pain, but someone on FM has linked them in-line for easier viewing.

Has anyone ever seen bokeh like this before? Those images are crazy (in a good way)?

It will have to be used sparingly or the look is going to get old pretty quickly.

This is the closest I've found so far Dallmeyer Super Six 2" https://www.flickriver.com/photos/44264/sets/72157633349913194/

The most interesting photographers to me are the ones who have the creative vision to speak with their own voice.  The least interesting are those who can't see any further than endlessly trying to recreate a 'look'.

I'm confident there's more to the new Heliar than the stuff that's linked to above.  ;)
