After photographing "Spiderman" (above), in the first few days of my ownership of this new lens, I must admit to this (rather expensive) lesson. I own this lens BUT DON'T LOVE the 28mm focal length. :-(. I know, I know, I really should have maybe rented the 28mm for a while. I love my 35mm FLE, 50 Lux Asph, 24mm Elmarit, but really don't like the 28mm FL. I will put this minty Ultron 11 up for sale soon.

Can you really make a decision on a focal length in just a few days?

I predict you will miss it and have to buy another one. That is the true expensive lesson.

Yeah, I would hang on to it for a little while longer. I like the 28 because it is a bit wider than 35, and I can crop to 35 if I want, of course the same can be said for your 24. I do like 28 for my normal walk around lens.

No, you misunderstood me. I took that photo when I first got the lens, months ago.

Ultron 28mm ASPH II at f/2.8

I'm still struggling with the 28mm focal length but I'm making it work.

It is, and fairly evenly spread throughout the frame.

EDIT: The above image was shot with a B+W ND 3.0 filter. No lens profile in camera and no lens correction in post.

I received my copy of this lens this week, and it's been fun. One thing I realize is, the camera doesn't know what lens it is, and when I import into Lightroom it also is undefined.

It doesn't really bother me while shooting, but I do see it says undefined when I turn on the LiveView. When importing, I look for profiles in Lightroom and I see the version 1 of the lens, but not version 2.

Any suggestions on what to do? Is this an error or is this just how the Voigtlander lenses work?

I have no idea about LR but you may wish to hand code the lens as a Summicron 28/2 (011010) or to set lens detection manual to 11604 (same Summicron).

Leica lenses made since mid-2006 have 6-bit coding marks on the lens mount so that the camera recognizes the lens (aperture data is guessed, so it rarely matches exactly what you set on the lens). You can add the 6-bit code manually as LCT mentioned or send it to a repair shop like DAG that can replace the mount with one that has the 6-bit code. But even with the code, the lens will register as the 28 Summicron, and that may not be what you want (6-bit codes are only for Leica lenses – your camera will never recognize your Voigtlander lens for what it actually is).

The manual profiles in Lightroom are ones Adobe creates, and that has nothing to do with Leica or Voigtlander. The distortion and light falloff characteristics of the current 28 Ultron may have been close enough to the previous model that Adobe didn't feel it necessary to create a new profile – or they just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Using an uncoded lens under lens detection auto is not the best thing to do IMHO. If this does not cause freezes, as i suspect it can on the M11, the camera will apply automatically the last lens profile entered manually. Fine for those who have only one uncoded lens but otherwise a 21mm profile can perfectly be applied to a 135mm lens this way. Been there done that with an uncoded Tele-Elmar 135/4. Only solutions i'm aware of are hand-coding the lens or entering a lens profile through lens detection manual as advised by Leica.
