CITIES regulations are in place for good reason. Legally imported mahogany here in the UK is now VERY expensive due to the scarcity of legally importable wood. Exporting/importing such material is controlled and any without proper paperwork risks confiscation and fines for the exporter. It is possible to find legally imported wood (I have done so) locally which can then be used for restoration projects. I do not like having to point out the legal requirements but if we don't stick with them material such as Cuban Mahogany will become unavaiable from its natve country. The supplier that I use is here and you can read their statement too if you want: https://shop.exotichardwoods.co.uk/environmental.html - they say that in the USA the Lacey Act also applies.

My Contax III. The light meter still works and on a good day, it's only ever a stop out. The lens is great.

Seeing this wondrful Contax III reminds me I managed to have at least one Carl Zeiss in my Fomtenelle Leica collection. Here is my former Contax I with 5cm f2 Tessar lens nº 1606650. I also had another one with the Tessar lens 5cm f2.8 nº 1345545, this time witk the nicely embossed leather Ever Ready Case.

My Leica repair man gave me two Contax bodies, both only useful for spare parts.

My repair guy is still struggling with my Super Nettel, something about two pieces of very thin ribbon. That Zeiss/Contax metal blinds shutter was an absolute disaster. It was much more sophisticated than the Leica shutter, but the canvas shutter on the Leica was much easier to maintain and repair. There is a lesson for all designers in there somewhere.

Ok, let's go with the Contaxes.

Here you have my 3 samples all of them post-war (Color Dial, BD and IIIa) and all of them recently service by a former Contax service. I was very lucky for finding that service in Madrid, so I serviced all of them before they could get retired (the usual reference for servicing these has a 7 year wait list). Even the light meter in the IIIa is spot on 🙂. The black dial has an unusual 35mm 3.5 Planar.

Take care,

Augusto

The Contax are sophisticated cameras outside and a little bit overengineered inside

My father's Super Baldina has appeared here before with its original Meyer Gorling 5cm f2.9 lens. Now I have fitted it with a spare 5cm f3.5 Leitz Elmar which I have left over after my Kochmann Korelle K episode and I will run a roll of Fomapan 100 through it. Heresy though it may seem, I would be surprised if the Leitz lens is better than the Meyer lens, which is very good. I will post some pictures, maybe on a separate thread, when the roll is finished. The only thing I have to get used to with this camera every time I use it is the clutch for wind on, which, if not properly used, can lead to double exposures or missing frames.

An innovator certainly, but some men paid the ultimate price for his innovations.

Problem is to get the correct tension on these ribbons, first curtain is running on them, second curtain is closed by them

F1 racing was a dangerous sport.  But Lotus did not stand out as being anymore dangerous.  Over the period Lotus raced in F1, 5 drivers were killed in Lotus, 5 drivers were killed in Ferraris and 5 drivers were killed in Coopers.

I remember all of that, including Le Mans in 1955 and Von Trips at Monza in 1961 etc , etc Then later on there were others eg Rindt, Peterson. Yes, Chapman was an innovator, but nobody listened until Jackie Stewart took a stand. It has been a long haul since then. Motor racing is still dangerous, but if the Bottas and Russell crash last Sunday at Imola had occurred in the 1960s one or both of the drivers would now be dead. Chapman innovated but did he do the right innovations?

As for Contax they are another example of why we should be wary about innovations.

I just bought a 35mm f3.5 Planar. I am using my Contax lenses on Nikon rangefinder bodies as I sold my two Contax bodies thinking that the Nikon’s are more reliable.
