I have three scenarios in mind:

  • Leica and many others a waiting for the 43 Mpixel Sony BSI sensor to hit production
  • Leica are hoping SL2 and SL2-S sales drive SL lens sales and the line shows more profit than the CL line ... and CL/TL will be allowed to wither away.
  • Leica are hoping Q2 sales show more profit than the CL line ... and CL/TL will be allowed to wither away.

I've found the SL2-S to be a fantastic mirrorless body, but I am not prepared to lug around the SL lenses, so will use it with M lenses.

I've already decided the CL 18/35/18-56 or Ricoh GRIII and GRIIIx pair, suits me better than a Q2 and non existing longer lens variant.

A CL-2 with 43 Mpixels , IBIS and a wide TL Summilux lens would hit the right spot ; otherwise future spend goes to M or elsewhere.

I'm using Sigma I series lens with my new SL2-S. I had the 35mm and 45mm I had bought for the CL and just added a 24mm f/2 and a 90mm f/2.8 to go with it. I have my L-M adapter for M lens as well. I had thought about getting a 24-105mm Panasonic lens but on a heavy body I just didn't feel like lugging it around so the 90mm/24mm are half the weight and half the price.

I recently sold my SL, I still have some compact Sigma L-mount Lenses with me though, and I'm stuck between purchasing a CL or waiting for CL2.

Part of me knows that CL is already a good camera, yet it is already a 4-year-old model. I couldn't help thinking there will be a new one releasing soon.

I don't have numbers, but I'm sure the Q2 sells much much more than the CL/TL combined together. Just have a look at the number of Q2 special editions.

Moreover, I've seen plenty of Qs (and Ms) in the wild, but I've never seen a CL or a TL. I know this is just personal experience and you can't make assumptions based on that, but still...

Most photographers do not see them as rivals. The Q is full-frame. Those who need full-frame are less inclined to look favourably on sub-full-frame cameras. Until they reach a certain age, when other factors come into play.

One possible indicator? Numbers of pages in forum image threads?

  • Q/Q2/QP/QM - about 780
  • CL - 609 (plus another ~300 in the T/TL/TL2 thread)

The Q was launched more than two years before the CL. So, FWIW their popularity is comparable in Leicaland at least.

Well I hope the CL sells as much as the Q, this way Leica may keep supporting it for years!

I have no experience with the Q but i suspect is less then full frame due to distortion corrections.

I'm not sure how big the actual sensor is, (likely normal FF), but yes, this is true.  Stripping the op codes on Capture one, you can appreciate the lens is actually more 24mm ish than 28.  In practical terms, I don't think it matters one iota.  The output is truly stunning.

There has been much speculation about the future of the CL system. Today I received from Leica one of their periodic news-sheets by email. Here is the link to the web version of the information. https://view.mail.leica-camera.com/?qs=102ef500d7307f46748eedb469be7cf16f2dc7295f680d4f4de9244faa6ad1d5ce5a7788a7983dfdb3cbb4307d0e5454ab0506afda4241cf826a02171600238c6b8a9534b9e3580feae6dc16034e1ce7

It is quite an interesting focus on macro lenses and their use. However, I was disappointed not to see the only dedicated TL-mount macro lens included in Leica's survey. Is this a genuine oversight? Or is it tacit admission that the TL lenses are being delisted?

Well.... a few weeks ago a friend of mine was told by a Leica employee that there will not be a CL2 and no more TL lenses.

I wouldn’t wait for something that may never happen. The best camera is the one you can buy and use now right?

I hope it’s not true. The CL is an awesome camera and this forum shows that!

Might be true, but then again might not be. In either case, it would be nice if Leica would reveal their plans for the APS-C camera line. I don't expect them to do so at this time, but it would be nice if they did.

That’s bad too.

I just bought the 60 TL, BTW. Spectacular lens.

My trusted Leica store told me that there will be a CL2 for sure.
But it has been postponed several times.
Do not except it soon. Initially April 2021 then November 2021. Maybe March 2022 ?

I guess that chip shortage is the main culprit. Every manufacturers has to decide between build expensive devices or cheaper one with their limited supply.
Guess what ? Leica would rather made more SL2, M10-R and future M11 than future CL2.

I was told by a reputable source, much to my dismay, that there will likely not be a CL2 or any successor to the CL. His comment was "it's not in the Leica budget for this year" and that "sales of the CL do not support continued investment". I hope he's wrong, but I doubt he is. I sold all my CL gear (had everything but the 60mm macro) and switched to the SL system (still have a bunch of M gear but these days it's too cumbersome for me to use1). I personally love the SL and SL2-S, but with Leica glass they are just too heavy for me for travel. I wish I had kept the CL kit and just bought the SL gear for when I am not traveling. I traveled to Spain the last two weeks and ran out to my local dealer to buy an emergency Nikon Z50 kit (with zooms) before I left. That combined setup was less than the weight of my SL2-S body alone (and by the way, the images were very good - was surprised). I carried my CL and 3 lenses on a trip to Rome before COVID and it was perfect.

I really wish Leica would update the CL, but business decisions are based on numbers and not desires.
