Crank-Powered M: maybe a bad idea, but similar to crank-powered flash lights, I think it would be neat to be able to use the fold-out thumb rest to charge an internal capacitor to fire a shot when the battery is dead.

You stole my idea!

Eventually a barebone M without LCD, EVF option, Wifi, Bluetooth or menus to play with would consume less power. The last generation of compact cameras and consumer SLR had disposable lithium  batteries with high capacity and long shelve life, good enough to power film transport, flash and AF, which under some circumstances I would prefer over rechargeable batteries.

Since the dawn of ages Leica responded with decades of delay to requests for faster lenses, integrated/TTL metering, auto exposure etc.. It's, after all, a small company rather than a small division of a tech corporation. In fairness, it took the SLR camp years to offer TTL metering with open aperture.

I think a bare bones, high reliability, bug-free M would be great. Lighter weight too, 24Mp plenty.

Re-chargeable batteries are needed to avoid the awful environmental impact of disposable batteries.

But, I already have that with my M10-P. 20,000 frames without so much as a hiccup. As far as I'm concerned, it's the perfect camera for color shooting. The same is true for my M10M, although I must admit the 40 MP sensor is really, really nice.

Just click the link that lct provided above then let's move on.

Thats what they said back in May 2020, it is already February 2021, new models [M11] is just round the corner, and after that next new model [M12], and so on.  No good screaming RF or  Nothing, It is a matter of time before ever increasing number of MP on the sensor is not going to be enough to sell.

Who is screaming RF or nothing? People are expressing preferences, not stating ultimatums. Those of us with M systems will make decisions about future Leica offerings by weighing the pros and cons at the time. Currently, the rangefinder is a primary consideration that has kept me buying new M bodies. If the rangefinder is dropped, I'd certainly look at what was being offered in it's place, but I'd be looking alongside several other cameras (like Sony) that I can use my M lenses on.

Perhaps screaming was a strong word, however i hear a lot of gnashing of teeth and feet stomping about mere tought of RF being dropped.

I am not suggesting for a second to driop optical RF but selling yesterday's EVF packaged with premium price digital camera is not going to work for ever.

What package? I’ve never seen it packaged with an M body.

When I said ‘bare bones’, I was lending my support to a simpler concept, without large LCD on the back cover. The M10D came close but it’s going for jewelry, not user, prices and I’d like to see it as useable without wi-fi too. Lighter weight also desired.

If it has an EVF it’s not an M mount camera.

An M-mount camera is a camera with an M mount. A Leica M for instance. Or an Epson R-D1.

Edit: ... Or a Ricoh GXR A12 M mount. Then camera + M mount = M-mount camera. Simple. :D

But the 'M' stands for Messsucher or rangefinder in German.

It’s not that simple.

A IIIf with an EVF would be an interesting project for someone, are you up for it? 😊

Thanks no thanks as it would not be an M mount camera. I have eleven like that : M3, M4-2, M6J, M8.2, M240, R-D1, RD1s and Ricoh GXR M mount. M240 and GXR have an accessory EVF already. I just want another compact M mount camera with a built-in EVF in FF format.

Fair cop, got me, compatible would be more appropriate.

Not alluding to you personally but splitting hairs seems to be general undertone of this thread. Some people are traditionalists and would love nothing more than digital camera loaded with film like digital cartridges and powered with rewind crank and on the opposite end of the spectrum modernists would like best of modern technology incorporated into the M mount camera.

If I want traditional I reach for my freezer and pull out roll of film and load my MP.
