nicci78 Posted December 14, 2020 Share #25 Posted December 14, 2020 (edited) From my experience with Original M Monochrom. Colour filters effect is different with monochrom sensor than with B&W film. So your previous experience may not apply here. Only 3 + 1 colour filters are really useful with Monochrom. - Yellow : enhanced contrast, very useful to avoid having to do it in post every single time. Consider it as your UV filter. It will cost you 1 stop. So it is ok to use all the time. - Orange : the best. The one you should use for dramatic skies. Higher contrast. Excellent for very bright days. Or cloudy days with dramatic effect. It will cost you 2 stops. - Green : best for caucasian portraits. Or to darken green foliage. Cost you 1.5 stops Bonus : Light red : for special effect such as Day for Night. It will cost you 3 stops. Do not use dark red This is my set of four Heliopan filters in 46mm. Welcome, dear visitor! nicci78 Posted December 14, 2020 Share #29 Posted December 14, 2020 (edited) In the end Q2 colour with Lightroom colour mix vs Q2 Monochrom with colour filters looks like a zero-sum game. Q2 MONO got 2 stops better high ISO. But you are losing 1 to 3 stops of light with colour filters What you get in one hand : desaturated colour with infinite post processing colour mixing. But beware that Q2 only got 25% of Red or blue pixels and 50% of green one On the other hand : Q2 MONO forced you to plan the type de photos you want to make. Then choose the right colour filter. Shoot. Almost no post processing required then. And much better image quality. Because the colour filter effect will apply upon 100% of pixels. But you can’t change your mind afterwards. nwphil Posted December 14, 2020 Share #30 Posted December 14, 2020 if one was time to place a filter, it's likely that will have time to take another shot without or with a different one - the Q2M requires a different mind set, workaround of sorts. Previous to it, except with the M8 and IR filter, the shots taken in b&w were mostly in PP, and a few times actually changing the film mode to monochrome ( sometimes just the jpeg filter thing) Now I think in terms of shades and contrast, but it's a "brain muscle" that still needs a lot of training. Color filters will be a new process, a whole new thing as I only have been using ND's or CPL

Appreciated. However wife doesn't like the extra drama (due to the filters) in the images I've shown her. I'll probably just stick to a bit of 'manual' dodging/burning done judiciously in post ...or just plain not at all. Think I'm happier with that as, in post, I am more in control. Taking a filtered shot is effectively hardwired - cannot be 'undone'. Though I may consider a filter for environments where I might want to be mechanically protecting the lens more. Worth the wait 👍 I just ordered a Q2M from Popflash Photo. They are a friendly, smallish dealer where it is possible to speak directly with the owner. Their website shows that they still have Q2Ms in stock.
