Advertisement Posted October 25, 2020 Posted October 25, 2020 Hi Gibbo, Take a look here 2020 "Covid-special" Global "Not-The-One" Challenge - details and theme. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
RayD28 Posted October 26, 2020 Share #122 Posted October 26, 2020 Depends if you are voting. In a challenge it’s all about what others like and pushing yourself to think like others. Just give it a go. It’s all for fun. That’s the important thing. 1
250swb Posted October 26, 2020 Share #123 Posted October 26, 2020 I took the 'challenge' to be within the limitations and theme so I had enough trouble thinking for myself never mind thinking like others. 2 1

RayD28 Posted October 26, 2020 Share #126 Posted October 26, 2020 My family's recommendation was mixed so I went with the one I liked the best.

StS Posted October 26, 2020 Share #128 Posted October 26, 2020 Well, if I counted correctly, I've done the exercise sixteen times now and counted the votes once. I'm pretty much convinced there is no "winning formula", since typically even the winning shot gets no point at all from the majority of the voters. So the question would not be how to convince the voting audience but which part of the voting audience will be the deciding group (I'm hesitating to write "swing states"). In the past, I've shown my shortlist to friends who have an eye for pictures (hobby painters, photographers, people with a general interest) and found they all disagreed about the best picture. Apologies, I'm certain I wrote this before, my ambition is to hand in a picture which is worth to be shown. If some people in the audience get the concept of the picture, I'm happy. erl Posted October 26, 2020 Share #129 Posted October 26, 2020 Russian Roulette comes to mind. There is no knowing which image will get up. My personal persuasion is that the inclusion of some human element gives a psycological advantage but is not a guarantee. Historically, being a 'city centric' competition landscape photographers have been at a slight disadvantage, but this time around they may have the lead! OTOH, ahem, keeping away from the pack has an advantage, maybe. It is wide open. Go with your impulse!! P.S. This is the first time we have been given a 'Theme'. That should kick start some slow thinkers into action. Making the first step sets you on your way. 1

I did think 'what would others like' but actually it's best to not to do that. Looking at previous challenge winners will show you that there's really no pattern to the type of shot that wins.

My problem is that if I tried to push myself to photograph what others like, then for me, it wouldn't be fun at all.

Dennis Posted October 30, 2020 Share #135 Posted October 30, 2020 (edited) What if participants (voluntarily) post the contact sheet (all 36 film/digital exposures) ... It would be fun and terrific learning for all. Did you ever do it before? Or was it the winner only who post the outtakes?? andybarton Posted October 30, 2020 Author Share #136 Posted October 30, 2020 Lots of people post out-takes but no one has ever put up a contact sheet before. Interesting. 1
