Popular Post andybarton Posted September 7, 2020 Popular Post Share #1 Posted September 7, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) As will be obvious to everyone now, and for obvious reasons, the One Challenge in Athens will not be happening in its usual form this year. We should just push it forward 12 months and, with a bit of luck, meet there in October 2021. However, there are many of us who have had some fun over the years on the Challenges, so having discussed this with others, I propose that we have a Global "Not-The-One" Challenge this year. It would be really good to see entries from all over the world, from people who normally cannot get to these events. The One Challenge has matured over the years and is as much a social and sociable event as a photography one now, but we all need to carry on keeping safe and looking after each other. However, normal "One Challenge" rules will apply. The event is open to all members, everywhere. DATE: 10th October 2020 TIME: 14:00 hours wherever you are RULES: Entrants are allowed to use: ONE camera body ONE lens (or focal length if using a zoom) Either or both must be of Leica brand. ONE roll of film (or 36 exposures if digital - no deletions along the way!) ONE ISO Camera, lens and ISO to be declared along with the entry email, please. TWO hours for taking the shot from the time of your first one Choose ONE best shot Send the best shot to me (details later) and I will post onto a single new thread. Voting by all members will be open for a couple of weeks after the closing date for entries which will be 31 October 2020 at 22:00 GMT The shots will be shown in one thread, anonymously, and the shot with the most points, will win. Usually, there is a prize pot involved so that there is a cash prize for the winner, but we will leave that for next year. Kudos is so much more satisfying than Euros... If people do want to meet up with other members locally, on an ad-hoc basis, then that absolutely fine, of course. James has proposed that we have a theme this year. I have always considered the location for the Challenge to be the theme itself and many people try to capture something about the city in which we have gathered. That's part of the "challenge" - taking a good shot in a city that you are not familiar with. If we are all over the place this year, a theme sounds like a good idea to me and I would like to propose "By Water". That gives everyone the chance to shoot something locally, by the sea, river, lake, canal, pond or whatever as I am pretty sure that we all have something nearby. It could be a landscape, vessel, people, anything so long as there is water involved. If anything is unclear, shout and we will be delighted to help. 29

Guest Posted September 7, 2020 Share #4 Posted September 7, 2020 30 minutes ago, andybarton said: TIME: 14:00 hours wherever you are TWO hours for taking the shot from the time of your first one Clarification, please. andybarton Posted September 7, 2020 Author Share #5 Posted September 7, 2020 Yes - the challenge takes place on one afternoon, so the entry needs to have been taken in that time slot. If you don't start until 14:30, then you can carry on until 16:30, but the shot must have been taken during daylight hours. Thanks

larsv Posted September 7, 2020 Share #8 Posted September 7, 2020 Good idea! Put it in the agenda. Water nearby in Holland shouldn’t cause a problem 😄
Dennis Posted September 7, 2020 Share #9 Posted September 7, 2020 Awesome. I'm IN. Two more questions please. In my town, the sunset on Oct 10th is 6:58pm. Can I shoot from 5pm to 7pm let's say? It's still daylight right? From when I start shooting the first picture, I have two hours for maximum 36 exposure at the same ISO exposure (with my M10). Do you collect/need to see the 36 exposures as well, or only the one shot I chose for the challenge? Just curious. It looks like than this it's a challenge born for film, and extended to digital as well, right?

That's fine, so long as it's still daylight From when I start shooting the first picture, I have two hours for maximum 36 exposure at the same ISO exposure (with my M10). Correct, and with one lens too. Do you collect/need to see the 36 exposures as well, or only the one shot I chose for the challenge? No, just the one best shot. It looks like than this it's a challenge born for film, and extended to digital as well, right? The original challenge was about 15 years ago, so the "one film" element was maybe more relevant then, but it's still a good discipline that works for all At the end of the day, it's all a bit of fun, but the "restrictions" do make it interesting, especially under normal circumstances, where the entrants are usually in a strange city, usually with a strange language. As I said above, the social aspect of it, with a lunch and dinner in the evening (plus other "opportunities") are what make it a good weekend. Should be a piece of cake this year! 2

stunsworth Posted September 7, 2020 Share #13 Posted September 7, 2020 Andy, just to be clear, is it ok to travel a reasonable distance from where we live? I’m not talking cross continents, but I feel a visit to the seaside coming on.

Gibbo Posted September 7, 2020 Share #15 Posted September 7, 2020 Great idea and thanks for stepping up again, Andy! We weren't going to be able to make it to Athens anyway this year so at least we can partake this way.
stunsworth Posted September 7, 2020 Share #16 Posted September 7, 2020 One more question. Will there be a nighttime challenge in addition to the regular one described above? I realise Andy will probably get more entries than normal, so may prefer not to have the hassle of keeping track of two challenges, so I’m not going to burst into tears if the answer is no. andybarton Posted September 7, 2020 Author Share #17 Posted September 7, 2020 Happy to carry on the Night Challenge tradition too.
earleygallery Posted September 7, 2020 Share #18 Posted September 7, 2020 Thanks Andy, great choice of theme. I think this is the best way to go this year. Hopefully we get a record number of participants too and it might encourage others to join the next 'proper' challenge.
Sandokan Posted September 7, 2020 Share #19 Posted September 7, 2020 Thanks Andy. I am in. Will decide which lens and camera floats the best, nearer the date ... as per normal, usually 30 seconds before writing it down and wishing to change it 30 seconds later
