Wow. A topic about a firmware update that's talking about the difference between nominal focal length and actual focal length. "Thread drift..." :D

Nominal marked focal length is usually within +/-5% of the actual focal length, measured at infinity. Far as I'm aware, it's always been that way. If you can actually see the difference between a 48.9 and a 52.4 mm lens, you have better eyes than I do or are just being a mite OCD. LOL!

G

it is just because I notice the difference in field of view between Q and Q2 50mm crop mode (50mm equivalent) and Summilux-TL 35mm (52.5mm equivalent)

Then I also noticed the slight difference between Summicron-R 50mm (79mm equivalent) against Q2 75mm crop mode (75mm equivalent)

The difference is noticeable at every distance. No need for trained eyes. Just side by side, you will get more field of view with 50mm and 75mm crop mode.

That's why I started investigating the subject.

Exif it totally dependant of camera manufacturers. Whatever is written in it, will be passed to you.

It is quite logical to use the marketing name in the Exif. Otherwise you will be confused.

I use the "real" focal length, because it will impact the multiplication. The more you multiply, the bigger the gap will be.

52/78/98/140 just automatically looks weird when the rounded versions would be standard fl's of: 50/75/100/135. and i would use all those latter figures in casual use and in the field. but i appreciate having the actual figures as well and can see several real world uses for having them.

again, it's a very useful chart and it's easy enough for those familiar with 35mm to round them to get closest to classic focal lengths.

So 50mm lenses become 52 but 35mm remain 35, 28mm remain 28 and so on? Why not 36, 29...? Seems like those equivalent things are driving me crazy

Sorry for this simple question - if you have your CL set to EVF, but you use this new "screen driven" way of changing things on the LCD, how do you easily access the LCD?

The status screen is only shown if you press the Menu button.

If you mean a CL set to EVF only, press the Menu button to display the status screen, select the User profile icon with the arrows and chose a profile. Not a profile set to EVF only though.

You're way too worried about numbers. All these equivalences and now nominal vs actual focal length. Just go out and make photos, learn what a camera sees, then use that to advantage. That's what's important.

i do know. for 8mm up to about 2-1/4x2-3/4, 4x5 and 8x10. film. and really only 35mm and maybe the 2-1/4x was necessary to learn maybe a half-dozen each as it wasn't or isn't like there are dozens of focal lengths even available for most of the other formats. and once you knew 50mm for 35mm, you'd know what a 12,25,100, and 200 would act like. and it's not like anyone was using medium or large format lenses on their slrs. and the rangefinders i used only about two brands even had interchangeable lenses.

so yes, digital is a different ball game and i appreciate being able to mix and match. and i appreciate even more not having to count the cost of each frame--i've probably missed a million shots in the film days simply because i couldn't afford film or processing. but i'm a data-oriented person as 45 years in tech jobs proves. so no, i go into hardly nothing blindly hoping to learn through numbers of photos shot.

If you set your Display preferences to EVF only and press the Menu button, the control panel is displayed. You navigate the control panel with the four-way controller pad, pressing the OK button to select options, and then the submenus operate with the four-way controller and OK button as well.

I just tried it. I like using it this way better than I like using it as a touch screen control... :D

i don't use the touch, as you know. but i might be interested in using this evf only mode. does hitting the /menu/ key still cycle through /info/, /favorites/, and then /menu/ if used this way? or can you dismiss the /info/ screen after changing something on it?

But you can "dismiss" it by either pushing the Menu button or tapping the Menu icon on the lower righthand side (horizontal stripes). That will take you to the full menu which you can use as before.

Seems like it’s all a bit easier. Thanks for this!

what is the evf extended option? i couldn't see any immediate difference when i selected it.

on my walk this evening i'm taking the 75/2.4 on the cl to test drive my new digital teleconverter. all these are  approximate off the top of my head (wait! i'll go back and look at the handy chart and edit). the 75 is like a 105 on apc and then it should become like a 135-150 at 1.3x and maybe a 180 at 1.7x. a 180/2.4 is nothing to sneeze out if the quality will hold up.

ah! better than i estimated. the 75 becomes approx a 110-115 on the cl, then approx a 135 at 1.3x and nearly exactly 200 at 1.7x. i suspect i won't be able to hold steady at the 1.3-1.7x settings though. but for those who can and can tolerate any image loss, it makes an excellent telephoto set.

I have taken the first pair with the 40mm Summicron-C (which is, of course, the proper lens to use on a CL).

this is the truest comment i've seen on any photo forum! bravo mate!

i couldn't figure out how to quote without the images, but this was from 'pop' who posted a shot using said lens. and i'd like to have one as well--i'll start looking on ebay and see what i can find. anything in particular to look out for? different versions of it? tks.

There is a Minolta version with slightly better coating. Most are in good condition, but many need tightening of the ring that holds the optical cell to the   barrel - a 10-second DIY job. Try and find one with the original rubber hood - it has a weird filter thread (the Leica version). The lens hood takes a series 5.5 filter. The Minolta lens has a regular 36 mm filter AFAIK.
