That is all true though I wanted to shoot at 60 FPS and have the external monitor especially because of there is no tilt screen on the SL2 and lastly working in ProRes is a lot easier on my computer. Does the SL2 record internally in H.264 or H.265 ?

I just got another email from Leica support and in regard to the battery issue and not being able to record after about 50% battery life he said using an external battery does not solve the problem and only using the AC through USB did work.

Using an external battery at this point will only charge the battery while the camera is off or in sleep mode

The idea of using an external battery is to run the SL2 directly from it. Recharging  from a battery bank is usually very slow and not really interesting. Only if you have no other option available.

And that is what is not working at the moment

I can also confirm at least for Davinci Resolve users that L-LOG footage matches between internal L-LOG and external L-LOG when using the Ninja V all that has to be done on the Ninja V Prores footage is go into Clip Attributes and change "Data Levels' from Auto to Full in Resolve then the footage matches perfectly

So what I have learned so far is if you don't mind working with H.264 footage and all you need is 30 FPS shooting internally has no penalties in IQ, thought if you want 10 bit 60FPS 4.2.2. footage then the external recorder is required

Not using video, so to be sure I checked a video site.  If USB power pack or AC makes no difference to my camera, running without problems. (Which USB battery bank did you try ?)

From https://www.fdtimes.com/2019/11/06/leica-sl2/

USB-C

The SL2 has a USB-C connector that lets you operate the camera with an external USB-C power source for longer run-times. This connection also enables USB-C charging of the camera battery when the camera is in standby or OFF. You can tether the SL2 to Lightroom with a plug-in and a USB-C cable.

The SL2 hotshoe and flash protocol is identical to the SL. It differs completely from Panasonic S1/R which shares the hotshoe layout with it’s micro four third siblings.

Leica has it’s own off camera flash system OEM by Nissin. So the 165Ws Nissin MG10 is the most powerful off camera flash that supports the Leica SFC1 commander. Yes you have HSS support but only in TTL mode. The manual mode does not work on SL & M10 as the trigger will not fire camera at HSS manual mode. However for SL2, it still does not work, except the camera triggers but the flash will not go off in HSS/manual mode.

Greetings,

Coming from M to SL, I don't have the proper bag to carry the body, 3 lenses and a few other things. It sounds like this bag has very good opinions ?

Is anyone using it ?

Thanks !

looking thru the options you gain Cine4K60 in 10-bit 4:2:2 vs 4:2:0 8bit w/ SD looks to be the only advantage...you may have to wait on Atomos to support L-LOG...but it wouldn't hurt to try it.

Just set your Gamma to L-Log and try recording.

This was the email from Leica

Hi Steven,

I just ran into this issue and tried the battery I have for charging phones etc.
It didn't run the camera at that battery level but AC through the USBC cable did.

I’ll do some more investigating and keep you posted.

The phone/ipad battery charger will charge the battery in camera when the camera is off or sleeping.

I just tried to record 4k 10bit internally on a nearly empty battery with the SL2 hooked up to my external power bank and it seems to work. I see a "plug" symbol next to the battery level indicator (see attachment) and the camera records without any pop-ups or anything. For reference, the power bank I´m using is this one: https://www.anker.com/products/variant/powercore-10000-pd-redux/A1239011 . This power bank supports 18w usb-c power delivery, maybe this is a requirement for externally powering the SL2?

Ok, sorry posted pre-maturely. For the test above the battery warning was not yet coming up before I started. I now tried to record with the power bank attached, while the battery warning was visible , and it does not work🙁. However, if I switch the camera off when the battery warning is visible, then attach the power bank, switch the camera on again and start recording, it is running for another 5min, before the warning comes up again. Pretty strange behaviour😀

last post, sorry for the stream of conscious style posting, this might not be very helpful since I basically just confirmed what @kuau already found out. Anyway, just tried to run the SL2 with my MacBook Pro Charger attached, while the battery warning was visible. And what I get is the following error message: "USB power supply is unavailable. Power supply is insufficient for the connected device". Which I personally think cannot be true, since the MacBook Pro charger is capable of delivering 85w.

USB protocol involves a means of identifying what a charger or device is capable of. The communication drops down to the minimum supported value if the two devices can't agree. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple and Leica had implemented the standard slightly differently.

I know that, in the previous generation, only chargers that implemented Qualcom's "Quick Charge" protocol were able to deliver full power to phones with Qualcom chipsets (which is to say, most Android phones).

This generation of USB is supposed to be more widely compatible, but Apple's implementation could be slightly different.

Hey all,

Does anyone else get a frame shifting issues on the right side of the frame when recording externally in 4k60fps? I've attached a screenshot of what I mean. This may be a weird setting with the Ninja V (first time using it). Any insight?

I was be able to record the 29min limit in C4K 30p on sd card L-Log

I started with full battery and AnkerPowerCore 20100 connected with Anker USB-C cable. after 29min the camera battery was still full.

for some reason the charging icon on the top display does not come up.

PS. since I have only one battery I have been using the battery to shoot all day photos with it. you have to be careful in selecting the right cable, some of them don't charge..

Thanks for all the input. Just great, I lerned a lot.

Can anyone help me with the following issue:

I do use: SL2 with Ninja and set all similar to the above recommendations. But my question is:

- I can not switch off the recording to my internal SD Card: How can I switch it off

- Can I set the internal recording to an other setting (e.g. lower quality) and the HDMI Port still records 4k

What would be the best setting for high quality recording on my Ninja and do not use the internal ones or a low quality to the internal SD Card?

THANKS!

Rene

That's a feature called "HDMI Trigger" where the Atomos tells the camera to start recording. Check your Atomos manual, you should be able to turn it off.

You should be able to record internally at a lower quality, like mp4. I don't think it will let you record internally at a lower resolution. That would require twice the processing in the camera (2K and 4K streams).
