I am not sure where to put this thread so I will put it here since the Zenit M is said by some sources to be "essentially a Leica M 240."

To be honest, the camera itself doesn't have much of a pull for me; the 35mm f/1.0 lens is interesting, though.  It would be great to see some test shots from that lens.

Only 500 of these kits will be available, according to the article.  Priced at $7000 USD, I think I'll pass.

Here are two links with articles about the Zenit M:

Hm, just announced and already on SALE!

Might be it is interesting camera for the 35 focal length folks. The lens may be interesting in the long run as some specialty, provided it´s capabilities are up to future high mp resolution standards. Zenit has got Zeiss genes .....

Where would one have to send in the body for calibration and adaption of other M lenses when needed? Leningrad?

Otherwise, nice design. The body shape seems reminiscent of the Zeiss Ikon ZM. To my taste, the ZM feels better in the hand than the more rounded M.

it says :

  • Genuine collaboration with Leica - Zenit M designed in Russia and assembled in Wetzlar.
  • Based on the Leica M camera (type 240) with similar functionality
  • Differences between the Zenit M and the Leica M are in the design and the software

Interesting Lens.

My M240 feels & acts like brand new (keeping the sensor clean helps)

I'm waiting for the M11

My back-up & macro field camera is a Canon 5DM3, also in great shape

(Annoyed I sold the M9 - am wary of buying used that old, but I do miss it's characteristics.  Lesson learned.)

iirc, the Zenit-Leica Agreement was announced time ago (1 year or so) … a sort of special edition with lot of Russian flavor… probably behind it there must be some personal relation between Dr. Kaufman and some rich russians… they like do some business with Austrians  (some years ago they  tried to revive the old venerable Kneissl brand… a story with a bad end, iirc)

What means M39?  A sale price of 7000$ for the camera + lens 35mm f/1 lens is not too bad.

M39 is a typographical error and refers to the original thread mount lenses.

A German panzer in T-34 skin with F/1.0 fire power, that's interesting.

Astute analogy.

Maybe a sale at 7000 rubles next.

  • 2 weeks later...

And Zenit cameras used to be sold here in the UK at bargain basement prices in the 1970s and 80s! Think I would stick with Leica.

A bit like asking £25,000 for a LADA car!

Yes I know Russia has changed and embraced capitalism but I think a new brand name would be in order as too many remember what went before! 😀

Correct, they were great value for money in mid 60's.  If memory serves, a Zenit with a very good 42mm?  f2 lens(manual diaphragm) was around £40 and a M2 with 50mm Summicron was around £205. The similar price Practica (my first SLR - paper rounds didn't pay well) had the advantage of an auto diaphragm.

That analogy would actually make a better tank, so a better camera than the M240?

I wonder if the high price of the kit isn't taken equally between the lens and body, either way unless the body on it's own doesn't beat the M240 by a vast margin (priced at less than second hand M240 prices) then I can't see more than the initial 500 being sold. I'd have preferred they base it on the M9 which I think has a good following still and with much love attached to it.

As far as I remember, Zenit used to be Zorki, which has a great history based on Leica designs in the 20th century in Russia.

If I cast my mind back to the 1960's, memories of a Zorki 3C are lurking there.  Quite fond memories at that.
