Interesting!  I have been looking on leicacamera.us over the past week, and the SL2 is listed consistently as back-ordered. You found it available on Monday, or had you signed up for notifications beforehand?

I found I could add it to my cart when I checked shortly after 9am Eastern. By the time I finished with my order (after my ever-so-vigilant credit card initially rejected the transaction suspecting fraud), my order status was already showing me "cannot reorder because it's not in stock" (like I could afford two). I wasn't even sure I was going to get it until I got a tracking number. I had signed up for notifications from multiple stores (including leicacamera), but have yet to receive any notification.

I just had a similar experience... I checked leicacamerausa.com this morning, and it was NOT in stock. However another check about 30 min ago, and it was in stock. I decided to purchase and after some credit card verifications, I have a new SL2 in fulfillment.

Even after my purchase, I checked again and there was still stock available for order. Unfortunately, it is out of stock again.

Check often if the key.

Tommy.

I did preorder my SL2 through my (excellent) Leica dealer two days before the camera was announced. Fortunately for Leica, the demand is so high that he did not get mine yet. I could have purchased the SL2 on the day of the announcement via the Leica USA website but expected that my dealer would get one within a week or two. Thanks to this forum, I kept rechecking Leica's website. I even got once an email saying to complete my SL2 purchase, but every time I checked, they did not have one in stock ... until today :-).

Leica USA's website seems to be the easiest way to get an SL2 now. Feel sorry for the dealers. :-(.

This appears to be pretty universal behaviour that is present in Europe as well ....... and seems to be a recent change in Leica's selling behaviour. Despite 'waiting lists' ..... whether official or unofficial ..... stock does appear online regularly on the official Leica Store 'Shop' pages and is there if you take the effort to check frequently. They seem to be favouring their own outlets much more than in the past with a corresponding reduction in the supplies to independent dealers.

If  you are really serious about tracking down a particular product I'd suggest using a website monitoring tool like Distill and configure it to watch the specific pages on all the Leica and other dealers sites..... that way you get an email or SMS when anything changes

The day the SL2 went on sale, I checked Leica's online store and saw it available to purchase. I thought to myself "wow, Leica must have made so many that they could fulfill the preorders and still have some left to sell online". So I called my local store to check the status of my preorder. Unfortunately, the guy I spoke to misinformed me by saying my SL2 was somewhere in the store, and he'll have his manager call me back. So I didn't complete the online order. Turned out I had to call the manager at the local store a few hours later, and he didn't have any idea when Leica would be sending over some units (they still don't have an idea). Since then, it was a daily check of the online store till I got lucky this Monday. This model of selling at Leica's online store does upend the whole "first come first served" wait/pre-order list that all other stores follow. For selfish reasons, I can't complain in this instance - had I not been able to take advantage of buying it online, I might have received my SL2 just when Leica announces the SL2-P!

I had that confirmed the other day by a very prominent independent US dealer. He commented that Leica Stores, boutiques, etc. will see stock before himself and the likes of B&H and Adorama.

My preordered SL2 arrived at my dealer yesterday. Felt very light carrying it home. Very heavy with the 24-90 zoom mounted.

Mount a 90-280 from the dealer for a bit, a the 24-90 (60% lighter) will feel like a dream.

Sorry if this is in the wrong thread but I didn’t know where to ask about the availability of the Leica APO-Summicron-SL 35mm f/2 ASPH. This is my first Leica camera so I am unfamiliar with their business practices. I have never bought a newly introduced to the market camera in any brand before now. Is this normal for Leica to have such small initial distribution of a released lens? Does anyone have an educated guess on when they will be widely available? And if this is not how they regularly do things what is the cause? Please feel free to direct me to the correct webpage if this is already being discussed elsewhere.

Sometime in May, for the US. You might call Glazer's Camera in Seattle; I've seen a 35SL in a box in one of the cases in the past week; it might be used. Ask for Dominic.

Leica manufactures in small batches so deliveries are always intermittent.  But I've had my 35 since sometime last Spring, so things should be settling down.  One factor is the last minute 25% tariff, in which German lenses are at the bottom of a long list of retaliations for EU subsidies to Airbus.  Leica discovered that packaging the latest Summicrons as kits with new SL2 bodies removes the tariff, so perhaps sign up for one of the kits, which could start arriving in January.
