Hi Jono,

Firstly thanks for the write up, informative and bite size just the way I like it :p

Having read your positive comments regarding the AF, I was wondering if you might add how your experience compares to shooting say your dog with the original SL? I've not had the best of experience with tracking photos, more hit than miss, so I'm hoping the SL2 is a little more responsive on that front. Thanks!

Andy

I think it's up to Elinchrom or any other brand to release a trigger with Leica protocol (obviously Leica will need to provide the information). So far, it looks like no camera of the L-mount is "open" to that. It's a pity because this new 47mp sensor would excel with proper studio lighting and outdoor at low ISO, where HSS will be required. Still not convinced on the higher ISO, it seems the grain / noise rendering is less organic and definitely more digital than the original SL. It's not about having cleaner images, it's just how the images look at higher ISO. Obviously we're stretching a bit on pixel density. For me, the SL could be primarily a studio / landscape camera, definitely in medium format territory with the SL crons for those applications.

@AndreaP75 that's true, Elinchrom would need to make the dedicated remote for Leica.

On the Leica  website they mention the „Multishot“ function which produces files of 187 MP. I don‘t think this was mentioned in your description, Jono, or did I miss it?

I understood Sean Reid‘s first report that this function is not working yet and will be added by firmware later. Is this right?

It's supposed to be included in a firmware update sometime next year

Hi There

Typically I get very little information (they like me to sort it out for myself) Of course I can ask questions, but I didn't think to ask about this. The Multishot function is not included in the current firmware - but now I understand that it will be there in the new year.

Hi There Andy

bite size? seemed huge to me when I was writing it!

As for the AF, I'm a bit of a luddite, and I almost never use AFc, let alone tracking. I think the AF is faster (and much more clearly organised) than the SL, certainly no trouble taking snaps of Matty (as you can see). But I'm sure it is more responsive.

All the best

Thank Jono, bite size as in digestible information 😀

Always enjoy seeing Matty pics, I’m pretty certain my usual subjects aren’t going to be as nimble as him so that’s good feedback.

Important to know that Matty is a Bitch! (she get's terribly angsty when people get her sex wrong!)

. . but I'm pleased to be digestible (I'm not sure that Emma would agree!)

Matty I do apologise, the wind blown elegance should have given it away.

Forgot to ask another question, are there any evf adjustable settings e.g. brightness

As always thanks for your user write up Jono - good to see a resolution increase that does some 'greater justice' to the resolving power of the SL line of lenses matched to (finally) IBIS  - I now have a reason to add to my collection - I don't know if I should thank you or not - for that.😂

All the best

Quite right . . .but at least it's likely that Sigma and Panasonic will bring some out, they might not be quite as good, but they'll be a lot cheaper!

True, but I'd rather my primary lenses be my best lenses.

Thanks Jono,

Great write up, as usual.  I must confess I only scanned it.  I’m happy with the original SL, and to be honest I have no interest in more MP, optional LENR (I use the X1D for long exposures), IBIS, multishot or the new body.  I like my SL just the way it is, and I especially like the brutalist design and the button layout.  The release of the SL2 also means that I don’t need to baby my SL - it’s no longer the latest and it is, after all, a tool, albeit one that I like a lot.

Incidentally, I dropped by the local dealer today to pick up the dual charging hub for my X1D II, and they had the SL2 in the shop.  It looked nice, but not that dissimilar to the SL, to be honest.  I can’t say it tempted me, but I was impressed that Leica had it here on release day.

Best
John
