Could one do snaps like these with an iphone? Just curious as i don't use smartphones to take photos (digital CL + 7art 35/2 @ f/2). Never tried my 7art 35/2 on full frame though but a compact 8 element copy would interest me certainly.

Ya.  iPhone 11 Pro, three lenses: 13, 26, 52 (FF equiv).

Below 52mm.

Interesting indeed. Is this natural OoF?

Yes. I shot very close, maybe 8-12" from the trunk.  I also adjusted the exposure "in camera" to bring up the trunk.  Coulda used the flash for fill too, but, I like the exposure adjustment generally.

By natural oof do you mean lens aperture produced or computational?

I meant lens aperture produced.  It also does a computational bokeh but it is a particular mode (portrait).

I think it still might be computational as aperture, I think, can’t be chosen on an iPhone.

The technology in those phones with multiple focal lengths comes from a company called Light.

that was rude and personal.  Anyway, was that iPhone photo?  I think iPhone can do better.

Actually, here in Texas, we just use that as a colloquialism indicating excited interest in the topic :P

The second one means he's twice as interested.

New Yorkers don't get it either.  Translates poorly.

It seems to me that the out of focus highlights are all the same size on the grass and the background, regardless of distance from lens - it looks computational to me. Am I seeing ghosts?

Slightly deviating from the main topic, but has anyone seen the price v1 eight element lenses are going for these days? Red Dot Cameras have one right now, and they want £3400 for it. £3400!!! Bet they sell it for that amount too.

I bought one in 1998 for £350. It was mint and in its perspex cylinder, with original caps and hood. Ended up selling it on eBay in 2011, and was astonished to get £1650 for it. It's a lovely lens, well made and sharp. But the background blur isn't as smooth as you get with the Summaron, and it can flare quite badly if you're not careful.

£3400!

Perhaps a commission sale on behalf of someone who overpaid in the first place and ended up not liking the bokeh? 😁

Btw, I fully agree that the oof rendering of this lens is nothing to write home about, although I haven't found it too bad in terms of flare resistance (I always use a hood, though).

The prices of the 35/1.4 v1 ("steel rim") are also ridiculous these days - for a lens that is not truly "rare" after all - and the Summaron 35/2.8 also seems to reach new price heights every day.

Truth be told, these lenses look gorgeous and are a joy to use...

I think that the image makes sense optically.  That was shot 26mm from about 10".  The total DOF is about a foot. Like any lens, you get close enough with a big enough aperture you'll get some bokeh. :)

I still don't think this image shows what I'm thinking of a computational DOF rendering where a feature like a face is IDd and the rest of the image is blurred.  For sure the iPhone does some interesting stuff.  For example, it pre-captures several frames all the time and processes a selection of images for best exposure, detail, etc.  I haven't found anything that really gets specific on the process, I suppose the exact process is proprietary and can be a significant competitive advantage to Apple.

Chinese made lenses are like... dashcam quality.  It seems to capture something but you can't even read the license plate of the car in the front.  I've tried 2 or 3 copies of 7art fast lenses but all failed.  maybe f/2 will work better but again - micky mouse.

Amusing!  Keep your head in sand!
