Gelatino Posted March 24, 2018 Share #64 Posted March 24, 2018 In French some say " ça m'a coûté la peau des fesses" (it cost me my bum skin). it seems elephant skin is rather as dear as my bum skin.

Denys Posted March 24, 2018 Share #66 Posted March 24, 2018 And to think I was looking forward to meeting him at the Leica Society AGM next month. No longer, I'm afraid. Give the guy 24 hours to defend his position (he must be aware of this), if not convincing - kick him off the agenda.. ..it’ll give him more time to count the money people pay him..
jaapv Posted March 24, 2018 Share #67 Posted March 24, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) The wide mouth rhino has just died out. The elephants are the next. That's the future...for sensible people. P1040438.JPG It is the Northern White Rhino, actually, I did see the last three, including Sudan, a few years ago in Ol Pejeta... A sad day indeed. I think the African Lion is well on its way to extinction if no action is taken. Some subspecies have already died out and hybridisation is rife. Elephants are not doing too badly in a number of countries.
ianman Posted March 24, 2018 Share #68 Posted March 24, 2018 I think the African Lion is well on its way to extinction if no action is taken. Someone take some action... make some bags out of them before they all go!!
Ko.Fe. Posted March 25, 2018 Share #69 Posted March 25, 2018 The wide mouth rhino has just died out. The elephants are the next. That's the future...for sensible people. P1040438.JPG Canadian geese was next to extinct, simply because of overhunting. Once hunting was banned and it was enforced, those flying poopers are everywhere now some decades later. Elephants doesn't have to be next as died out just because they are overhunted. But if they will disappear by natural cause it is how nature works. If not we would still live among dinosaurs. As of you visual remark about sensitive people... It is irrelevant to this topic. You could have camera bag made from textile (chemical or organic), you could have it from farmed animal. But your visual quote is not relevant to it. It is about shopping bag. They used to be this made. Then it was switched to plastic. Now some not lazy ass people switched to reusable ones. And some huge by population regions banned use of plastic bags. Once and for all. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-20457764.

Once and for all. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-20457764. Elephants will die out because they are cooped up by human encroachment. Their natural migration routes are blocked by human habitation, highways, fences and hunting areas, so they are destroying their own habitat in reserves that are too small. I cannot call that natural causes.
david strachan Posted March 25, 2018 Share #72 Posted March 25, 2018 Most of his (tasteless IMO) bags are leather from farmed animals...just as we farm cows and sheep for their products. After all we eat crocodile and emu, and culled kangaroo in Australia. He says the elephant leather is from certified naturally died elephants...but it's just too close to those "elephant foot umbrella stands". ...
marcg Posted March 25, 2018 Share #73 Posted March 25, 2018 (edited) I suppose that Thorsten might think differently if he had some skin in the game Photo by Olivia Fernandes While travelling through Thailand, Olivia Fernandes photographed the eye of this elephant in captivity, hoping to demonstrate the pain she believed it was suffering. He’s a complete fool if he cannot see and understand the connection between creating a demand (albeit an extremely small demand) for elephant leather and the poaching of elephants, regardless of where his leather comes from.

earleygallery Posted March 25, 2018 Share #76 Posted March 25, 2018 I emailed Thorsten and he's explained that he's working on a new range of bags made out of skins of homeless people. Some have tattoos which add a nice unique touch to the bags. Seriously though, he's on another planet with all this. His bags might appeal to the sort of person who spends a lot of money to go and shoot elephants I guess, assuming they want a camera bag that looks like granny's hand bag. I'm shocked, appalled, amused and bemused in equal measure.

He says the elephant leather is from certified naturally died elephants...but it's just too close to those "elephant foot umbrella stands". ... Naturally dead Elephants? Hogwash. I have yet to see somebody push the Hyenas and Lions aside to obtain a bit of skin. Only the Ivory is salvaged. Naturally dead elephants are left to nature to dispose of. Elephants, BTW, are the only animals besides Humans that perform rituals to honor the dead. "Certified" Elephant skin comes from culled and hunted Elephants, other highly controversial practices; at best (least bad, I suppose) from captive Asian Elephants. How many die naturally yearly? These are animals that live up to sixty years. No hunting discussion please. Those end in locked threads and banned members .
david strachan Posted March 25, 2018 Share #78 Posted March 25, 2018 Hi Andy The crocodiles come from farms, and so do the emu. There is some culling of crocs in the tropics due to the massive explosion in numbers since protection against game hunters, many years ago. They are usually captured and relocated, and some killed if they are known man-eaters. We loose a few people to crocodiles every year...usually those that go swimming in water holes and streams, which are often sign-posted warning of danger. ...
