Great kit, perhaps you might want to complement it with a stronger Grad ND (1.2 stop, 1.5 stop, or both) otherwise is pretty much all you'll ever need, IMHO.

Hello Maciel,

what you learned is correct, and works for extension tubes, i.e. when using macro lenses and adding an extension tube to increase magnification: that effectively changes the amount of light reaching the sensor. Here, though, the situation is different: the adapter doesn't "add" any extra length to the lens' original focal length, it just compensates for the difference in flange-to-sensor distance existing between the M and the SL (with the M's flange-to-sensor distance being slightly longer). To put it another way: with the adapter, your M lens used on the SL behaves exactly as it would do on your M cameras; without the adapter (were it be possible to mount it) you would actually GAIN light compared to the same lens used on your M. I hope this makes sense :)

Best regards,

Vieri

Yes, it does make sense, thank you Vieri! Good to know this :)

It’s already out there - 16-18-21mm f/4 Tri-Elmar ASPH. Less than $3900 used. Excellent image quality. Do you really need fast AF and IS at 16mm?

For interiors and architecture and serious landscapes, the camera is on a tripod anyway. With the SL’s viewfinder, manual focusing is easy. And the camera has a 16-18-21mm WATE lens profile for corner correction.

errrr....... try fitting filters onto it like polarisers, ND’s and grads .......

The Leica adapter is the only one that fits and you need to block the large hole left in it for RF use otherwise you get reflections and light leaks. It’s all very fiddly and needs additional step up rings as well.

The new 16-35 with the same 82mm filter size as the rest is much more sensible ....... and with the extension to 35mm means it would be on the camera 90% of the time for landscape use.

I love the WATE ...... but will gladly retire it when the new lens appears.

Great posts, certainly each has their advantages, for me I'm going a third direction and using my 18, 21, 24 primes.  I'm curious to see both the WATE and 16-35mm to see if one or the other will sway me, more likely the newer zoom.

My favourite landscape images always seem derived from inclement conditions. The weather sealing of the 16-35 will be most welcomed as a result, not to mention having to no longer fuss with mounting and un-mounting my M lenses whilst the wind blows dust all over the sensor. And I'd be surprised if the corner performance of the 16-35 does not exceed that of the M glass on the SL.

Looking forward to owning the 16-35mm. I decided against buying the WATE to use it on my M10 due to the difficulty of getting filters onto the lens. It was impossible for me to use ND filters on my 21 lux w/o custom fabrication works.

I also have the two SL zooms, but won't be buying this one (I'm very sure it will be fantastic etc, which will test my resolve).

I used to have and love the wide Nikkor zoom (12-24?) - great lens.  With the two Leica SL zooms, and 28 & 21mm in M mount, while the new zoom is wide enough, it leaves me with a huge overlap which leaves me cold.  I don't need 35mm ...

So, I will wait to see if there's a wider zoom somewhere over the horizon, or a really nice SL super wide - 15/2.8, maybe?

It's a monster!!

I'm not one of the "SL and it's lenses are too big crowd" but this has to be the biggest 16-35 ever made.....

And as an aside I got to test out my theory that a CL with 11-23 would be a fine wide angle option for my SL kit and I was very pleased at how well it worked out.

Yes. I'm having a fun time with it even with the SL. But I will wait for a bit to see if Leica has anything interesting later in the year.

Just received text message from Leica store on price of 16-35mm. It is SGD$8300. That makes it the 2nd most expensive SL lens after the 90-280mm.

Now the real pre-order starts. ETA 2-3mths on delivery.
