If you get any moisture into the camera while using that type half case you have go a lot of other problems.

While I appreciate the humor,  it doesn’t help me. 🙂 I live in the Pacific Northwest US, where it’s damp and rainy a lot of the time.  I do not know if a leather case with a magnetic battery door provides an adequate level of weather sealing vs. the camera baseplate it replaces.  I don’t know if the camera internals are further sealed themselves, or rely on the baseplate for the sealing.  I don’t habitually use my camera in the pouring rain, and if I do, I usually keep it under my jacket except when actually shooting. But I’m wondering if moist air might get into the battery and SD compartments, and from there to other electronics, eventually causing corrosion or flaky operation.

These cases with battery/SD card doors have been around for some time, and some folks here use them. So I just thought I’d ask.

It wasn’t meant to be humorous. Unless the camera was upside down you wouldn’t get any moisture of ant appreciation inside the camera. If the rain were strong or fierce enough you would have issues with the lend and lens mount first. Make no mistake about it a Leica camera body I’d dudpst and splash resistant and not waterproof. There is no weather sealing on the lenses or lens mount.

I think jdlaing has a point, half cases, and especially the battery door type encourage any water that gets in to stay in. Being in the UK my M10 often gets wet and the water can just run off, be wiped off, or dry naturally. A half case initially protects the body, but if water starts to run in between the case and body it collects and doesn't dry nearly as quickly, encouraging any area likely to leak to surrender. And in simple terms of collecting moisture you'd want your camera to be at outside ambient temperature as much as possible to stop the lens and viewfinder steaming up on the inside, so further insulating the typically hot battery of the M10 may not be so good.

Ultimately the best half case is the one you leave at home.

Does anyone have experience with the half cases from a UK seller called studentphotostore on the famous auction website? It can be found by searching for the item number 352329770116. They look very well made and finished, and they have a bottom place replacement with integrated tripod mount and magnetic battery door. They're also priced well.

Any insight much appreciated. I don't know if I'm allowed to post a direct link - if I am, I shall.

Great value if you are looking to spend a bit less than leica prices ..  Not equal quality to the more famous manufacturers but i dont think you  would be disappointed.

Hi Gordon,

So you actually have one of these? What's your experience been like? Many thanks.

No.  I don’t have this case model.  I have had experience of a similar case for my M9.   The ebay seller isn’t the manufacturer, but this selle r is in my UK region and providing good value products to camera users.  If you buy and are unhappy, the item can be returned to the U.K. address.

You should understand that the case appears to  replace the standard Leica baseplate.  That means that you leave the Leica baseplate off, and you never need to take the leather case off to change battery or SDcard.  That’s a great advantage.  It doesn’t come with any  neck-strap.

i regret spending 5 times that amount on a fancy case that I don’t find comfortable and is awkward to remove. Next time, I’ll be more sensible.

hope that helps...

Gordon @lucerne, and anyone else interested, I've received the half-case today and I really like it.

It fits well, the leather looks fine. The edges are nicely burnished and painted, the stitch-work is precise.

The bottom plate replacement works well, the magnet is reassuringly strong. The bottom of the case is made of aluminium with two cutouts, one for the battery/SD card compartment and the other for the screw that secures the case onto the body. This aluminium bottom is of course covered by leather and only visible in the actual cut-outs.

The front grip looks small and it feels like it's made from a rubbery foam insert underneath the leather, but it actually does it job very well. After having spent a year with an SL and not having used my M3 since 2015, I was really used to the ability to hold the camera from its right side and letting it hang from my hand as I walk. Together with a Thumbie, this makes the M10 almost as comfortable to grip as the SL, but much lighter of course. Speaking of which...

The case weighs 69g entirely including the screw (measured, I was told it weighs 75g, so a pleasant surprise). Since the baseplate is 49g (again, measured) this means the camera's only 20g heavier this way.

I have to say I am very impressed. If you want some photos let me know.

Hi,

meanwhile I also got the original brown leather half case for my silver m10 - looks lovely and I love the flap on the back. I was lucky to get a nice used one, saved a few bucks but especially have one which was slightly worn from the beginning.

The reason I write is the fuss about the screw. Because of that threat I nearly bought a replacement screw with the hinge upfront - luckily I didn't. I really don't get the fuss about the original screw. The original screw has a knurled chamfer on the outer diameter and can easily be turned with your fingers. Yes, there is also the slot to use a coin or screwdriver, but that's not necessary. I just tighten the screw with my fingers (pinching with my thumb and index finger) until it's tight and so far never had issues to open it the same way.

Just one additional information for all who are breeding about the topic while not having the case bought yet.

Cheers

Daniel

Is there a half case where the shoulder/neck strap connects directly to the half case itself?

I struggle with the M body strap lugs when adding or removing a shoulder strap.  There are times when I want to use the camera without one. I spent an excruciating 40 minutes trying to get those tiny rings to catch on to the lugs once.

I am sure one of the 'handmade' makers (Arte di Mano;Luigi etc) would make you a one off. At a cost of course. Ask them.

I don't really want to go down that road as it will likely cost as much as buying another M6 body, in which case I'd much rather have an M6.   If there is an existing strap lug solution, I'd like to hear about it though.

Hello Luigi here. I am already making, since about 30 years ago, IN MY NORMAL PRODUCTION, MY HALF AND FULL CASES WITH THE STRAP PERMANENTLY ATTACHED TO THE CASE, NOT TO THE CAMERA LUGS ! Just, please, search them. I make them with several different solutions... Ypu can search "luigi case for Leica M60" or "for Leica M9 Titan", or "Millennium"...
Cheers,  Luigi

Hi Luigi, thanks for your response.  Love your half cases, they're beautiful.

I have looked at your website a number of times previously but it's pretty hard to navigate.  I've just gone back to your website again right now and I cannot see the half cases you mentioned for the M10:
http://www.luigicases.com/a000-CasesLeicaM10.htm

I was looking for something like the third photo you posted but for the M10, where a separate strap attaches directly to the half case itself.  I use the Artisan & Artist easy slider camera strap.

You are certainly aware that many here have Luigi‘s half cases. Me too. And I had some problems too with the web page of Luigi. But my advice is: Write him a mail. Probably his daughter will reply. And then you can order exactly what you want. In the beginning I was a bit irritated. But finally I was fully persuaded with the productI got. Evidently making these beautiful cases or creating a web site are 2 different things. I am a fully satisfied customer of either Leica and Luigi 🥂😀

Received my Arte di Mano WITH ACCESS DOOR. Chose "Pueblo" black leather with black stitching.

Looks great, feels great, and has massive utility. No more removing a half-case OR base plate to access the SD card and/or battery!

Sorry for the threadspam - here it is closed, which wouldn't fit in the previous post. Has a nice, dull THUNK to it when the magnet draws and snugly holds it closed.
