Leica m 50 summicron (Not APO) or Summarit 2.4

Greetings.

I am relating to your question by proxy as the experience I have is with Summarit 35/Summicron 35mm ASPH, and the Summarit 75mm/Summicron APO-- both Summarits were the previous f2.5 models.

I have found both Summarits to be very capable lenses in many respects.  And with all honesty I credit them with introducing me to the joy of 35mm and 75mm focal lengths--I was always a 50mm/90mm user.  Their price points made their acquisition to test these focal lengths a workable proposition and an interesting expermintation.  However, I have also found the Summarit platform unstable--in the sense that there was always an urge to upgrade to the Summicrons under the presumption that they can offer better performance.  I did upgrade, and did not regret it at all.

The Summicrons seem to be better made by an observable margin; again, please remember that I am talking about the f2.5, not the current f2.4.  Performance wise, both 35mm and 75mm Summicrons produce more pleasant results, better color hues, and leave me with nicer haptic experience when compared to the Summarits.    Looking back, the Summicrons seem to be the more of a longer term solution than the Summarits.

Is this experience fully transferable to the Summarit 50/f2.4, I am not sure, but very confident that other members in the Forum will advise both of us.

Enjoy in good health.

I have both the modern Summicron (latest non-ASPH) and added a 50 Summarit 2.5. Both are delightful, and I can't tell a difference in my photos. I have no complaints about the Summicron - it is a standard for lenses. I added the 50 Summarit as I like small lenses, and love the one finger focus tab of my 35 Summarit 2.5, so the two make a great pair. I now use the Summarits more than my Summicrons in the same FL.

But... Every Leica user should have a 50 Summicron!

@Klausb,

I am in the market for a small and light 50mm as an all around alternative to my 50/1.0 Noctilux and am thinking in terms of a minty used 50 Summicron (non-ASPH).  You might take a look at a used 50 'cron as a possibility - just be sure to look up the serial # before buying so you can be sure of which version you are getting.

I bought a 50 2.4 and taking same-position shots versus an excellent 50 Summilux copy, and looking at the images in LR, frankly I was never sure which were from which lens! I also thought the build quality perfectly fine. Then I found a mint 50APO at a silly price……..

How silly?

Will just put in my two cents. My V4 Summicron 50mm is probably my favorite overall on my monochrome M246. Can't go too wrong with that choice. And what surprised me is it wasn't a favorite on my previous M240. It just sings on the monochrome for some reason.

I just got a silver 50mm Elmar M f 2.8 last week in LN/mint cond...and wow..thats a really nice rendering lens..as well as a lot of fun to boot..

I'm in the same boat as you...wanted to have a modern lighter alternative to my F1 Noctilux..and I am really happy with this new 50..its on the cam all the time now..

I would advise a v4 or v5 summicron 50mm. They are optically the same but have these differences:

v4

-> light weight

-> shorter in size

-> focussing tab

v5

-> build in hood

-> no tab

-> often coded in factory

Bingo!  If I don't need f1,4 then the Elmar-M is it... especially in chrome (just feels nicer).

I have 50mm summarit and I really like the photo that it's produced at f4 or f5.6. But, you could give more details about what you are going to use it for, otherwise I just share my experience.

Well, I use the summarit occasionally, as I have the 28mm Summilux glued into my M262. I am saving for the APO Summicron 50mm, though summarit being light weight superior lens with fast focusing ring. As I really like how IQ of 50mm APO Summicron, and always prefer to isolate my subjects. The Summarit does good work at f2.4 but not as equivalent to Summicron at f2

Matter of tastes of course but depends if you need f/2 or not i would say. If you do, i would take the 50/2 apo or the latest 50/2 non apo (v5). Only reason it has a bit less flare than 50/2 v4. But the latter is less bulky if you don't use a hood and it has been my favorite 50 for 10+ years. Now if you don't need f/2 i would take the 50/2.4 if it is as good as my 50/2.5. Better use the latter with a hood though as it can produce some nasty flare in special circumstances (typically when the sun is outside the frame at around 10:00 AM). The latest 50/2.8 is another option. My favorite 50 ever personally but it has a special rendition that you could not like if you don't try it. Happy snaps :)
