I'm not looking to necessariily argument. But after having shot over 20,000 rolls of film and having spent about 10,000 hours in a darkroom, I haven't yet encountered a situation where a given lens is so much better specifically for BW over color. and when I thought I did, it wasn't a symmetrical design. Let alone "vintage".

I have not tried every Leica lens..but imo with the DR Summicron... was much better for B&W high resolution..and less stunning for color (still nice though..)..and the Ver 4 35mm Bokeh king...was much better for B&W..than the 35mm f1.4 asph...which is too contrasty esp for nighttime stuff..and the Noct f1..I don't particularly like for B&W..but luv for color..

Upon seeing more pics from the Summaron 28...it certainly looks great on the monochrome..whilst the 28 2.8 asph..appears to be a completely different animal indeed..

Wattsy (Ian Watts) informs me via email (thank you Ian) that a Heliopan filter is available with this lens. Will the lens cap fit with the Heliopan filter attached to the lens (Ian informs me that the lens hood will not attach with the filter).

Ian informs me that the lens hood will not attach with the filter

That is correct, the hood is about a millimetre or so too loose to clamp on the Heliopan filter. However, a small elastic band around the filter rim is enough to allow the hood to clamp tightly. Another, much more expensive, solution is to buy the original and rare A36 hood that goes with the older 28 Summaron. As far as I know (I haven't tried it), that hood should fit the Heliopan filter nicely (though, if my understanding is correct, it won't fit directly on the new 28 Summaron-M).

The proper way to do it would be to install the hood, first. And then, screw the filter.

Wouldn't that be impossibly fiddly?

It pains me a little to say that Ned is right.  :D  I didn't think it was remotely possible but, with a little bit of fiddling, the filter does screw into place. This is better than my half-cocked solution because not only do you not need the elastic band (which is itself a bit fiddly to put on) but the hood sits in it's proper place on the lens (instead of 5-6mm further forward).

Funny, I read NB23's comment as slang - don't bother with the filter.

Are users of the new production Summaron using it with the hood or without? How flare resistant is the lens with vs without the hood? For me using the hood would slightly defeat the idea of using this tiny "body cap" lens.

The Summaron is not flare resistant at all. The 28 Elmarit asph is.

I tend not to use the hood. If I need to shield I use my hand. I like the good. It fold it a bit fiddly to use in practice.

Wish leica had made the hood a screw fit like the current 35 Summilux FLE etc.

Auto correct seemed to ruin my reply so I'll try again!
