Getting a Fuji medium format early next year. My M is awesome, but it's time for something new.

 Well done.

It's people like you that keep the camera industry afloat.

The is a world of difference between 'want' and 'need'

The fact this forum exists at all is testament to the former .....  :p

I'll also do my share to keep the industry afloat by buying something I want next year, but I'll test each system I'm considering before committing.  There's 'want' versus 'need', but also 'spontaneous' versus 'analytical'. Different strokes, which helps keep the forum conversation lively.

If there is no new M then the current M is a digital camera for life. Isn't that what many people want?

:)

Maybe in the film days....now I'd like to live longer than any of my digital cameras.  It'll be nice if the battery types and computer storage/recovery methods last as long as the camera.

I guess you will have after market batteries available for a long time. Maybe there will be innovation like same casing (as M battery) with replaceable innards. SD cards are used in so many gadgets to become obsolete in few years and card reader will be there for different connection type (USB or something else).

Yes, "for life" won't mean next 40 years for sure but more than decade (or more) will be acceptable to me. Even film cameras are dependent on film availability and processing chemicals production. Not very different.

hmm what's on our shopping list ...

My eyes are on a new pocket spring/memory foam hybrid mattress ...

I got that already - highly recommended ... you see, every mattress manufacturer has a _sane_ release schedule :)

Agreed!

On that note, Leica *needs* better products. But I don't think Leica *wants* to build them.

For me, my only "needs" is more time and energy and subject matter to use the cameras and lenses I own. My "wants" currently are to go to medium format which I never fully had enough time for in the film days and the new more stealth size versions coming seem more practical, which is why haven't even considered going for it until now. Now if Leica does come up with a new M, or Q, or T or..... Then I decide if the improvements justify putting them in the "want" department. But I don't complain beforehand about not having those improvements. Makes no difference to my work.

Now I am not sure what date to look forward to. Is it this year, next year?

Perhaps Leica has decided that the SL needs to get some more sales time because that camera definitely cannibalises M sales.

I am so anxious to hear how many SL are sold in comparisson with the M240/246/262 but Leica is not very on statistics lately.

Still happy with my M6 and M8. Most of you would not be satisfied - but I do not find my gear to be a limitation to my creativity or final product quality. I will wait and see what the new M brings. I am certain I will want one. But it will be hard to justify spending money on a new camera as long as my current gear works.

I disagree with this but since we have no stats it's all speculation

I have an AF kit and an M kit

They are so different there is no comparison

I always pick up the M kit if I can

In any event the SL is a much heavier system

If I was a wedding photographer the SL would be my professional choice. If I was a studio photographer for the glossies I would use MF

For all else it's M ;) (except for the occasional time it has to be pocketable and then it's RX100 time)

You're so right. I'm looking at a black and white  60*40 photo of an M8 every day in my room and it still amazes me, how good the quality is!

  • 2 weeks later...

Looking at Leica’s approach at “getting back to basics” by eliminating features, it wouldn’t be surprising to see a pared down MM246 before we see the next M generation.  No video, LV, or LCD, and 10,000 ISO.  This future commando Monochrom might be tempting, but my MM246 ("Otto") is going nowhere. So exactly what are we waiting for?  I guess I am waiting for something that brings me back to color.  With black and white, I wanted to simplify, but it's been surprising.
