Paulus Posted October 17, 2016 Share #226 Posted October 17, 2016 Btw, my ever ready case of my MP is 17 years old now. original Leica M6 case. Feels great. Don't pretend, that Leica was worried about a mm or two in the past. It fits, it works. it's a choise for people who like to have some more leather. It protects. Nothing wrong with that? Great ergonomics! Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! M28 Posted October 18, 2016 Author Share #227 Posted October 18, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Ok so I am convinced that it can't be that much thinner the digital M. But surely it could be lighter? It's heavy.
Paulus Posted October 18, 2016 Share #228 Posted October 18, 2016 Ok so I am convinced that it can't be that much thinner the digital M. But surely it could be lighter? It's heavy. I suppose it could be made as light as the M6/MP ? Some of us really love the weight of these cameras.
jaapv Posted October 18, 2016 Share #229 Posted October 18, 2016 The main weight is in the brass top. I think that Carbon fiber would be a nice material to lighten the camera. In fact I was surprised that Leica did not change to more modern materials when introducing the M8.
Exodies Posted October 18, 2016 Share #230 Posted October 18, 2016 Why carbon fiber? Why not Bakelite?
jdlaing Posted October 18, 2016 Share #231 Posted October 18, 2016 Why carbon fiber? Why not Bakelite? No strength and too fragile at thin parts and around holes.
Jeff S Posted October 18, 2016 Share #232 Posted October 18, 2016 A chunk of the weight difference is attributable to the big M240 battery....so savings need to come elsewhere, like the top plate or other structural components. Jeff
adan Posted October 18, 2016 Share #233 Posted October 18, 2016 I suppose it could be made as light as the M6/MP ? Some of us really love the weight of these cameras. M6 ttl "wet" (with film roll and batteries) - 608g M9 "wet" (with SD card and battery) - 615g 7 grams? That's the fair comparison, since both have the "correct-direction" shutter dial, which involves additional body height (more metal). Plus, of course, the digital Ms include motorized cocking. How much does a film-M motor weigh?
Michael Geschlecht Posted October 18, 2016 Share #234 Posted October 18, 2016 (edited) Hello Everybody, And don't forget the M3 that started this all: 595 grams WITHOUT film or anything else. 138mm x 77mm x 36mmBest Regards, Michael Edited October 18, 2016 by Michael Geschlecht
Denys Posted October 18, 2016 Share #235 Posted October 18, 2016 Why carbon fiber? Why not Bakelite? Love it! :-)
jaapv Posted October 18, 2016 Share #236 Posted October 18, 2016 Why carbon fiber? Why not Bakelite? That is going back a bit. Bakelite is not very impact-resistant. Carbon fiber is light and strong. They could also have used Aluminium, like the R9 top plate, which made the camera 100 grams lighter compared to the R8..

Paulus Posted October 18, 2016 Share #238 Posted October 18, 2016 M6 ttl "wet" (with film roll and batteries) - 608g M9 "wet" (with SD card and battery) - 615g 7 grams? That's why I put the : I think a lot of people complain about a weight the M has always had. One of the " arguments " I used to buy the M6 was it solidness. Maybe fashion changed? But Leica did not concern itself about fashion , or did it?
jaapv Posted October 18, 2016 Share #239 Posted October 18, 2016 Never mind the quality, feel the retro cred. I don't think there was ever a Leica Hawkeye...
jackk Posted October 18, 2016 Share #240 Posted October 18, 2016 I suppose it could be made as light as the M6/MP ? Some of us really love the weight of these cameras. I am one. I thought the weight helps to stable things a bit when i have to use very slow shutter speed.
