"emotional nonsense"

That's exactly how I read it as well.

"SL is nonesense" Then why are you on the SL section of the forum? Go shiver in the M section.

My main issue with this thread is how it went from someone seeking help for an issue while on vacation to "SL is nonsense" "the lenses are just slapped together with no QC" "Leica omitted loctite" "a high percentage of M cameras were shipped with out of alignment rangefinders"

A bunch of hate and anger. Half truths and exaggerations. Insults and demands. Either you have a solution or idea for the OP or move along.

If you are so dissatisfied with Leica, sell it and move along.

If you have something constructive whether critical or otherwise for Leica- let them know. If they ignore the issue, feel free to whine. If they fix the issue, thank them and move along.

My opinion anyway.

This is just one final note to report the outcome in the case of my friend's SL 24-90.  She finally heard from the SL specialist at Leica.  He suggested she try to gently wiggle the front element of the lens.  That worked!  Now it is moving smoothly from 24-90.

"Repair" a lens by wiggling the front element? Now that builds up confidence in the product...

Just a storm in a cup of tea :)

Emotions are always high around here, both in the pro and anti camps. There is something to be learned from both actually. I'm personally in the happy camp, but I don't use the AF zoom, nor gps, nor flash. If I did I might be in the unhappy camp.

.... better than "hit it gently with a hammer just in front of the zoom ring". I had a CRT TV some years ago, a Philips, which was notorious for dry soldered joints on the surface mounted components. A good smack on either side, one just after the other, usually restored function. Eventually, of course, it died and had to have the offending cards replaced.

So, do you have anything helpful for the OP?

You've lately posted these 'counter-rants' on multiple sections of the forum.  Does that serve any better purpose than others who vent from time to time?

I've noticed, too, that each time I've posted in rebuttal to one of your comments, using actual facts and links (see above), you ignore and just keep on venting....all the while trying to make it seem you're above the fray.

Takes two to tango....why not just let others voice their opinions and stop being the forum police?

The forum is mostly self-policing.  IMHO that's not such a bad thing.

I ignore you because you use my "counter-rants" as a platform for more badmouthing of Leica. You take any opening to post your links, your Puts quote (boring!) etc, etc. I choose not to encourage you any more, you do just fine on your own.

anyway, enough has been said. The OP's problem has been solved easily which I'm happy about. A bummer to be on vacation (or at work) and have gear fail.

And others seem to disagree with you....  http://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/258817-sl-24-90-stuck-at-24/?p=3019438

Or here....  http://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/248514-leica-s-lens-af-issue/page-4?do=findComment&comment=3017308

None of which is 'bad mouthing' Leica, and even including links to positive comments contradicting your rants.

As always, a place for differing views.

He can't. It's a sickness.

However, the forum is not really self-policing. If members have a problem with another member, please step back and use the "report" button. That is what we have a group of moderators for.

My rented 24-90 failed this afternoon.  I was zooming out when I suddenly felt some resistance at around 50mm.  I stopped and tried again and the lens zoomed all the way out to 24mm, but I felt some additional drag.  I tried to zoom back in and now the lens does not zoom in beyond around 50mm.  It feels like there is either something stuck inside of the lens or that there's a stripped gear.

This is _really_ disappointing to me because I was getting a lot of enjoyment out of this lens and it (along with the SL body) was expensive to rent.  I've stopped using it entirely and switched to using my own M mount glass.

Bummer.....I'm sure Lensrentals will credit your charge....and offer a replacement if you have more time.  Of course, contact them asap.

From post #11:  "Let's not make someone's stuck zoom into another long and senseless rant, ok? "

Now that was a silly request, issued three pages ago.

Having it happen another time does indicate there is something that Leica can learn from, and if Roger and Aaron at Lensrentals were the people that rented it to Joshua Lowe, a detailed explanation of what came loose or got stuck will be available for that purpose.  Let's hope Leica gets in touch with them.

Lensrentals took care of the issue, they've been very responsive.

The tech also mentioned that they had a similar problem with a different 24-90 in their rental fleet.

"We've encountered that issue before with another copy. It was the zoom collars inside had jammed up. We'll get that copy checked out when it returns"

A brief update: I rented another 24-90 so I could shoot in the heavy rain we're getting in LA right now.  Plus I wanted the flexibility of a zoom for photographing the Women's March.  My second experience with the 24-90 was 100% better.  The weather sealing is really great.  It's one thing to see it demonstrated in a video and quite another to experience it for myself by going out into a downpour for hours without a moment's concern about the camera getting wet.  Also, the OIS came in very handy when shooting on the streets after dark.  All in all I came away ready to buy a 24-90.  The size and weight are still issues but I'll have my 35 cron-m for times when I want a less conspicuous camera.

The zoom ring of my 24-90 is stucked as well. It started about 4 weeks ago, after I used to wear the camera with the lens facing down with a peak design slide strap. But maybe there is no coincidence at all. I managed to clear it by wiggling the front element as described in the thread above for several times, but it became worse and worse in the last days and it stayed stucked no matter what I did.
So I made an appointment with the customer care in Wetzlar today and they kept the lens. They claimed that is not a known problem but were reluctant to give an estimate for the repair time.
