Seriously, this is like a nightmare or some cruel prank. The M is way long in the tooth. It no doubt is stil more than capable- that's not in debate. It's just that, I mean wtf...  seriously get real. Make-a-new-M and allow me to not have to defend this elitist, half assed company any longer. Dude...

Please don't waste your talent defending Leica.

Just an improved sensor and the option to have an at least competitive EVF.

Welcome to the forum but you should relax a little.

The current FF sensor shows little improvement in IQ over that in the M240. Sean Reid thinks maybe one stop benefit at higher ISOs but couldn't tell the difference on the fruit & vegetable test at lower ISOs between the SL and M240.

I agree a better EVF would be nice, and hopefully will come in the next M, but as you wrote you're primarily buying a rangefinder.

Just get an M240 or wait for Godot.  The new M has yet to be announced and delivered.  In the meantime the M240 is a fabulous camera that produces excellent photographs. Whilst you're waiting you could be out unwinding, taking photos with an M240, and not worrying over what has yet to happen :-)

Regards

Seriously, this is like a nightmare or some cruel prank. The M is way long in the tooth. It no doubt is stil more than capable- that's not in debate. It's just that, I mean wtf... They built a new factory, opened all these stores, and I'm still almost a year into waiting for a an MM 246. It's so long I don't give a crap anymore. I just want a new M. Not some bull crap auto focus fixed lens camera, not an interchangeable one either. That's a different deal altogether. I want the damn camera that has been evolving for 100 years- a mother effing M. I wouldn't give a damn if it was even in the same body. Just an improved sensor and the option to have an at least competitive EVF. The EVF improved and released alone would be a sign of respect. Bottom line- the rangefinder is a joy of photography. The M is made for people that love simplicity. This SL, Q, T- seriously get real. Make-a-new-M and allow me to not have to defend this elitist, half assed company any longer. Dude...

+100. Those who don't see this are just blind leicoholics. One flop after another instead of focussing on what really matters..

V - flop. T - flop. Now SL - superflop. But M still has the same prehistoric EVF - cutting edge my a$$...

With every new A7 model more Leica M owners will lose patience.

So what will they do? Sell their M, buy a Sony and then sell the latter to buy the next M when it comes next year?

I’m losing patience too, and after just 5 posts.

Hey, Rick, what did you pay for that sweet 75mm? That could be worth trying out the SL alone.

Hi Lou,

As you know me, you know that isn't my 75 cine or my SL or my deck for that matter.    I suppose I should have given a link to the picture but I thought it more fun to post it off my deck. :)   Here is the link to the article:  http://www.fdtimes.com/2015/10/20/leica-sl-35mm-full-frame-autofocus/

Rick

ps  As you can see from this quick review, this camera isn't targeted at the hands that are holding Sony A7xx.  It is going to be a pro cine camera as well as competition for Nikon and Canon.  Did you catch in the article that the 24-90 focuses down to 12 inches?

Rick as you know, I am not into video, but I never realized there is a new 75. Thanks for piquing my interest.

You should look into video.  It is just like still photography except the images actually "move"-e.  Look into it, you can buy a sh#t-load of expensive new stuff.  :)

I was just checking on that 75 you show on "your" patio. Well, one must buy the entire set of 6 lenses and if divided equally it comes to $15k for each lens.  SOOOOO you are right about a shit-load of expensive new stuff. If I buy the set and want to keep just the 18, 50 and 75 will you take the others? If so, then it gets more reasonable and it makes the SL body just a small amount compared to the total.  But wait then I'd not have one AF lens. No good, I'll just take the 18 and 75 then.

Don't forget to budget for the 1st AC (Assistant Camera - focus puller guy).  This is a tough job from what I understand and full of pressure, so these guys don't come cheap.  Not to mention the rest of the crew and gear needed.  M240 is starting to sound better, huh?

However, more interestingly, to me at least, is whether they'll stick with the OVF or bite the bullet and go with their high res EVF or some combination thereof..

I hope they stick with the OVF. The clarity and non-computer image of the M's rangefinder is a unique selling point of that "traditional" camera.

I'll be sticking with the M for now. For the above OVF reason + (increasingly uniquely) small lens size + I only use wide-to-normal lenses.

If I was a telephoto or zoom person, the SL is potentially a much better choice than an M, and I'd likely prefer it over a DSLR (no flapping mirror). It looks a very good entry into that EVF mirrorless space.

My main axe issue is that Leica's image quality presumably isn't advancing massively from one camera to the next (M240 to Q to SL?), partly because the predecessors were already excellent, but mainly this decision to not go up in Megapixels beyond 24mp - not ideal for those of us that like to print large at 300dpi!

Build an M (heck, even an SL) with 40-50mp, and I'll be there ready to buy it. It would need a brilliant lens, but Leica already makes that with the 50mm APO. As a result, to maximise the body's high rez capability, I'd buy that lens too ......

Hey you could just retire and I'll hire you since I had never heard of a 1st AC. BTY, is the 2nd AC the pusher?

Holy stuff! That is one spendy outfit! I did not know the cine lenses covered FF.

Good point as I never looked closely at them. Cannot believe for those prices they are not FF.

Edit--Just checked. They appear to have an image diameter of 34mm.

I was looking at A7 and felt bad because of some features which existed in Sony. I thought about it for some time and realized how silly I was.

A happy M240 user for two and a half years. So happy that I might even skip the next M.
