Who cares what it looks like for goodness sake!  I care about what the pictures look like, not the camera that took the pictures.  You know Bach's brain didn't look that pretty either, but it didn't stop him cranking out the masterpieces.

I do want to know how well it plays with M lenses, though.

It's not a matter of how it looks like, but rather how it feels like in the hands.

I disagree. You need to do your homework and get uptodate with info.

Quote from diglloyd:

"The internet is abuzz with claims from those who think that the laws of optics have been repealed for the Sony A7R II, just because it has a new sensor.

These claims seem to be based on seeing less color shading, but this has always varied by sensor (magenta with some Sony sensors, green with others). Better neutrality is good, but it’s silly to think this means a whole lot. Sony cannot change the thickness of the sensor cover glass without altering the optical path, and this would degrade image quality with lenses designed for it (and in ways that test benches won’t necessarily show, such as color aberrations, bokeh and flares). So the A7R II has the same sensor cover glass thickness as all its siblings. Hence its imaging performance with steep ray angle lenses (e.g., Leica M, Zeiss ZM, etc) is not going to change vs previous Sony mirrorless models.

Well, I always believe in checking even if it is logically impossible, so I did, using the Leica 28mm f/2.8 Elmarit-M ASPH. The sharpness losses outside a small central area are severe, just as expected, very badly blurred/smeared over most of the frame."

similar to you, my priority is what the image quality is like. But given the potentially same resolution of 24mp from a non-S Leica (again), and already excellent dynamic range etc etc of its more recent predecessors, maybe image quality of this new camera will likely be very similar to what Leica already offers in the Q and M?? If that is the case, then this is ALL about the camera hardware, not about any notable improvement in image quality??

You missed the word "modified" in my earlier post.

Anyone know if this is a new mount or the T mount ?

See th translation of the Italian text:

Together with Leica camera body are presented three lenses, stabilized and equipped with bayonet T, hence the compatibility with the objectives for the smaller size, and its crop frame.

A modified A7r2 plays extremely well with M lenses at less than half the cost of the SL.

I did, however I would not rate a third party modification which cost extra money, destroys the guarantee and has potentially numerous other degradations. As diglloyd says this would compromise its performance with its own lenses. Sony designs its sensor for a reason for its own glass.

Sorry, but this hacking around doesn't prove anything to me. Simply put, the A7R ii as designed is not very good with wide angle M lenses.

Probably best to do what Ming Thein did, hack (and ruin) an old Nex-5 but show tis pretty cool with no glass at all for somethings

Yes. But careful, I got shot down for saying that at the M-240 launch. Needless to say I am still using an M9.

a ttl focus system has it's uses though, so I'm trying not to get cranky about the side step in image quality from an old, albiet tweaked, sensor.

Again (and again)... show us your sharp corners please. There is a special thread just for you (link). It is a pity that you don't post there because some people like yours truly would be interested actually and those who are absent are always wrong.

So, SL = Second Leica

Why might I want this as a companion for my M240?

- Long Leica lenses on a Leica body

- AF for mid-range (currently using an OMD-EM5ii for that)

- Low light performance and, I hope, silent electronic shutter option for concert/theatre use (using OMD-EM5ii ditto)

- I am sure the EVF will be an adequate alternative to an OVF.

Why might I not?

- Body too big to carry around??? I need it in my hands.

- Lenses too big. OTOH, the mid-range zoom would save carrying 3 lenses.

- price!

Edit: Pity it appears to have no tilt screen. On the OMD I find the combination of AF and tilt/touch screen great for taking shots at awkward angles and constrained locations.
