Winedemonium Posted September 25, 2021 Author Share #402 Posted September 25, 2021 By way of update, I wrote to Leica on 15th September, and received a reply the same day from their customer care team, who wrote: Thank you fro your mail. It was forwarded to our agency in Hong Kong. My colleagues will get in contact with you as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience. I 'replied all' on 16th September, to pass on my mobile phone number to the Leica Hong Kong team who had been copied in that email by the Wetzlar staff. I invited Leica Hong Kong to email, call or Whatsapp me. Having not yet heard from Leica Hong Kong, I followed up by email to both teams on 23rd September. I'm looking forward to receiving a response. I'll update this thread once it's all sorted out.
Overgaard Posted September 25, 2021 Share #403 Posted September 25, 2021 Just wanted to show for clarification the "E43 ventilated Shade" that fits on the 50mm SX and has a built-in E46 filter thread on the front. Solves many problems, and this is my second. The first one I banged up when the lens hit a wall. (The original hood I also banged up when it fell off in an airport). It's black painted aluminum. This one was designed for me, and I put it into production. There was talk that Leica would offer this one, but they went with the modifying the exiting "collectors item" brass hood. https://www.overgaard.dk/Thorsten-von-Overgaard-Gallery-Store-Hardware-for-Photography-E43-43mm-Ventilated-Lens-Shade-for-E43mm-old-version-Leica-50mm-Summilux.html Welcome, dear visitor! kharnak Posted September 29, 2021 Share #404 Posted September 29, 2021 Hey guys, i want to report that i have found an unbranded supplier who customized a tiny filter for this scenario. So narrow the bezel that it actually does not obstrct the hood going on and off. It has a diameter tiny bit smaller than the e43 but fits on the lens 43mm filter ring. I bought it from the leica dealer who sold me the lens and it's based in Beijing, China. Welcome, dear visitor! For those of us living outside China, are we able to order directly from the Leica dealer? I found something similar through Weibo but unfortunately its all in Chinese and so I didn't get very far even with google translate. Hopefully we will have better luck with your source. Winedemonium Posted October 7, 2021 Author Share #406 Posted October 7, 2021 Update. I now have the service part hood from Leica. It seems to be brass and black chrome, like the original clip on one, but with a male filter thread so that it can be screwed directly either to the filter thread of the lens, or to the filter thread on the top side of a filter. There is no Leica inscription on the hood, nor any engravings on it. Some pictures below. You can see it on the lens with and without a B+W Nano UV filter. One small consequence I had not considered. With the original lens hood you can of course rotate the hood to ensure that the vent blocks as little of the viewfinder as possible. With this hood you need to screw it in until its fairly tight. When I did this without a filter the vent was nicely positioned. However, when I did the same with the filter on it blocked more of the finder - not just because there is a little more length, but because of the vent rotation positioning. (Please excuse the quality of these photos, but I hope they illustrate the point). Welcome, dear visitor! Thorsten - that's a nice solution. I like the idea of being able to put a fairly standard-sized E46 filter (I have various coloured ones also) onto the shade that fits the E43 lens. Smart idea. I note too that your vents are a little more ample - perhaps less blockage? - than the Leica original, or screw-in version replacement. Do you have pictures showing the finder blockage? Yours is painted aluminium, or brass, or what sort of material?

I'd like to undo this thread and restore to the original hood mount. I've tried solvent and lighter fuel but no luck. Any suggestion? Hi Winedemonium, I also got in touch with Customer Care and they were very nice and send me a black chrome hood (Part # 422-700.040-000) that feel just like the original one. However, when i put both hood side by side, they appear to be the exact same hood. It doesn't look like the hood you received. Perhaps Leica send me the wrong hood? Here are the pictures... you can see both hood has the same clip. After try putting onto the lens, it doesn't lock in place and can easily fall off. Any suggestion? Thanks Edited March 30, 2022 by AndrewK
Tear Black Posted April 8, 2022 Share #412 Posted April 8, 2022 Hi all, I send an email to Leica on Feb and they help to amend the hood for free. Got the hood back, it was nice but then I soon realize a problem and I am curious how you guys & girls overcome it. So the hood screw onto the 43mm filter prefectly...but then when try to I use a 43mm or a 40.5mm front cap to clip it on...it does NOT fit (well, the 40.5mm cap somewhat fit, but it is clearly not a tight fit and it's driving me nuts). The only thing I can think of now is to unscrew the hood after every use which is something I very much dislike...
Patrik Posted April 9, 2022 Share #413 Posted April 9, 2022 I bought a 43mm Hauge cap to use on the lens when in storage or when in the camerabag travelling. Hood I keep in bubblewrap. When shooting, Leica UVII 43mm filter and then the ammended hood on. Lens is a dream though, like the rendering much more than regular Lux 50. Focus ring is just great. Just love this lens, just forget about the hoodissue.

Hi Andrew, for your reference, this is the hood I got back from Leica, it is in two pieces. Side question, any one know what the clip on is for? I try to screw the hood onto the clip and it is quiet obvious that it is smaller than the clip. I cannot think of any use of the clip lol Edited April 9, 2022 by Tear Black

I hate to unscrew the hood every time as I feel like the filter's thread is far from durable, and if I do the too many time it will just wear off both the filter's thread and hood's thread. By the way, I found a 3rd party shop that makes a metal wedge for the Leica 50mm focus ring (the curve fits prefectly), once glued on, it works like charm, the handle is so much better with the wedge Welcome, dear visitor! Just love this lens, just forget about the hoodissue. Done some googling, found it haha In summary, there is two 3rd party hood options + original hood modification by Leica can allow you to put a filter on this 50mm lens 1. Overgaard - round like the original hood 2. haoge - square hood like the one on 35mm 3. Send back to Leica for modification into a screw-in hood (In my case, the service is free of charge, you only have to paid for the shipping) 4. Super thin filter from Larry Gadget Shop (Sold out and no plan to restock) From price point perspective, haoge is a the most affordable option, seems like two people in this post has choose this option, and seem like it work(?) Overgaard one work fine though from comments, though it is the most expensive choice out of the three options but it is the most hassle free too (I did not purchase one, but it works well from other users in this post) Modified screw-in hood however, it works, but I encounter issue when fitting a lens hood (I eventually used a 39mm unbrand lens hood and it is somewhat fit only) and the only way out is to unscrew it after every use. They give you back the clip which apparently has no use whatsoever. Welcome, dear visitor! Fred Miranda Posted November 26, 2022 Share #419 Posted November 26, 2022 I have the high quality UNX-9622 43mm filter and it works perfectly with the supplied hood. It's a super slim filter at only 1.3mm thickness.
derleicaman Posted November 26, 2022 Share #420 Posted November 26, 2022 (edited) I purchased one of the cone shaped, early style hood, from a vendor on eBay. Do a search for Leica E43 12521G black silver Lens Hood for 50mm f:1.4 Summilux lens E43 version. The original cone shaped early style hood with the black trim goes very well with the BC Summilux. It is a little slimmer in your bag than the vented style, later hood. I have not yet tested it with filters. It is also a lot cheaper than the genuine Leica hood at $75, so no tears if you lose it or damage it. Excellent quality - you can't tell it from original. The only difference is that it has a smooth matte black finish, instead of the crinkle finish of the original. Welcome, dear visitor!
