jip Posted August 8, 2017 Share #201 Posted August 8, 2017 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) I don't think it's as simple as that. For one thing, I'm not sure that the original lenses with this design had the same problem as I think Leica sold compatible filters at that time. For another, it is not too much to expect from Leica IMO that the engineers take into account the use of filters (particularly as the company sells a range of filters) when releasing a lens in any configuration, be it in a "retro housing" or not. It's always easy to defend companies with a cult following like Leica by blaming the consumer for any shortcomings. Take a product with shortcomings, put inside a new optical formulae, sell for a higher price than the normal modern lens without it's shortcomings. Sure Leica is to blame, but you could've also tried fitting a filter with the hood before buying it... which clearly a lot of people didn't. BBHewee Posted August 8, 2017 Share #202 Posted August 8, 2017 (edited) Bravo, BBHewee! MONUMENTAL! I can't hold back the exuberant typography. Leica listened to the Forum! It looks like all we have to do is unscrew the original clip-on base and simply screw in the new step-down ring (50mm-43mm), which I assume Leica can mail to all registered lens owners, and we're in business? Right? This gives us the option of using hood with either the clip-on or the screw-in ring. Perhaps the ventilation may not line up perfectly due to different filter manufacturers, though the B+W looks in the neighborhood, this could be remedied by using the mount of rotating polarizer, removing the polarizer if one wanted. Applause, applause! Shoot. You might be right. As I received a whole new hood, and my hood doesn't screw off for some reason, I didn't even think that's the solution. Let me take a look tonight. roverover Posted August 8, 2017 Share #204 Posted August 8, 2017 (edited) Pictures as promised. As for the alignment, it depends on the filters. Still curious, is there a Leica Part number engraved anywhere onto the replacement hood that you received from Leica? Thanks. BBHewee Posted August 9, 2017 Share #205 Posted August 9, 2017 (edited) I can't see a part number. I also can't see a step down ring, i.e. mine doesn't unscrew. Edited August 9, 2017 by BBHewee
roverover Posted August 9, 2017 Share #206 Posted August 9, 2017 I can't see a part number. I also can't see a step down ring, i.e. mine doesn't unscrew. Understood, Thank you. It is interesting, if a part number hasn't been given to it, i wonder if this might simply just be a 1-off Hood or perhaps it is a prototype of what might be forthcoming. It would be good to know if Leica has any plans to follow up and release the hood to our small group of users of this lens.

BBHewee Posted August 12, 2017 Share #208 Posted August 12, 2017 I own an Overgaard hood for the 35 FLE. This feels much more solid.

Ernest Posted August 14, 2017 Share #211 Posted August 14, 2017 I can't see a part number. I also can't see a step down ring, i.e. mine doesn't unscrew. The part number probably won't be on the hood but just on the box. Leica Miami Store has the clip-on black chrome hood in stock with the part number: Leica Lens Hood for 50mm f/1.4 Summilux, Black Chrome (11688) The "step down ring" I am talking about is just the threaded screw part that allows attaching the hood to the filter. It's about 50mm in diameter with 0.5mm pitch threads where it screws into the hood, and then, of course, it has 43mm x .75mm pitch threads for the filter. Your test prototype may be screwed in fast, and there's no reason you should unscrew it. I was just guessing how Leica was going to get this "lens hood fix" into our user hands the simplest way possible. Sending out a screw-in ring for the black chrome lens hood would be the simplest (cheapest) solution, I suppose. It's not, as you allow, the most elegant. Ernest Posted August 15, 2017 Share #212 Posted August 15, 2017 Any difference with Overgaard's hood? Just curious. The obvious difference, straightaway, is Overgaard's is anodized aluminum and Leica's is black chromed brass. As BBHewee says, Leica "feels much more solid," as well it should. Overgaard's feels light, but to his credit, he provided a stylish solution to the black chrome lens hood problem. Now that Leica has stepped up with its prototype screw-in solution, we'll see what transpires. For all we know, maybe there's another clip-on prototype or the LCT retooling of the 13206 filter with the ridge for a clip-on hood. Setting aesthetics and all this aside, your question speaks to two topics, mainly: dimensions and usability. Overgaard's hood is a little more shallow at 16mm than Leica's at about 20mm. Both have a hood opening of 63mm, and their overall width differs only 2mm (Overgaard 67mm; Leica 69mm). Overgaard's ventilation struts are narrower at 5mm than Leica's at 17mm. The "see through" ventilation in Overgaard's is 6.5mm, and Leica's is 7mm. The main concern with the struts of a screw-in hood is whether they end up obstructing the sightline through the viewfinder. My Overgaard hood strut obstructs my sightline whether I use B+W or Heliopan filter, unless I stack two filters. Naturally, I don't know about Leica's prototype, but ideally, it should allow one to rotate the hood to line up the ventilations for a clear sightline. So any compare/contrast consideration is to weigh pros and cons. We're still waiting for Leica's announcement on the prototype. The jury is still out. Ernest Posted August 15, 2017 Share #213 Posted August 15, 2017 Correction: Overgaard's 43mm ventilated hood (aluminum) comes in black paint, red, and silver. It's not black anodized aluminum. I assume the red and silver is anodized, but I don't know.

I figured as much, and I can also see how that is possibly the best solution. However my original hood doesn't unscrew (a question asked by Leica CS so I'm going to guess some do), and it would need to be addressed on a case-by-case basis. Ernest Posted August 16, 2017 Share #215 Posted August 16, 2017 I have two of the clip-on black chrome lens hoods (11688) and both unscrew. I have the 35 mm Summaron-M Black chrome, and the lens hood also unscrews but to use series VII filters. Your clip-on hood maybe simply screwed on very tightly. There is no reason for you to unscrew it, unless that is Leica's instruction. Whether they provide users with a new lens hood or logically just the step down ring, we can only guess.
