jaapv Posted May 12, 2015 Share #41 Posted May 12, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Then Is it the responsibility of the software developer (Adobe) or software provider (Leica) to clarify this grey area?I find that the general principle of paying for what you get requires no clarification. So one licence for Lightroom is included in the price of the camera, and whether you upgrade or not is your own future resposibility.

bocaburger Posted May 12, 2015 Share #42 Posted May 12, 2015 I never used the TAN from my 2nd M240 because I already had LR5 from the 1st, so I guess I could use it to get LR6 now. Not that I use LR much, because I rarely ever shoot DNG. I'm still using CS2 in fact, know it well and it does more than I need. I don't always feel compelled to get the latest versions of software. It has to have something I sorely want.

CheshireCat Posted May 12, 2015 Share #44 Posted May 12, 2015 but when upgrading from LR5 to 6, then you are still using the same LR5 s/n to upgrade towards LR6, without getting any new s/n!!! No. You purchase a new "upgrade" serial number from Adobe. When LR6 is installed, in order to activate it, you need to provide both the new serial number, and the original "full" serial number of the older version you got "for free" from Leica. andybarton Posted May 12, 2015 Share #45 Posted May 12, 2015 Why shouldn't existing customers pay for an upgrade? If you bought a copy of LR5 yourself, retail, you would have to pay for an upgrade to LR6. Why should a copy provided as part of a camera purchase be any different? Paulus Posted May 12, 2015 Share #46 Posted May 12, 2015 I have never formally registered my cameras, just entered them in the owners area of Leica's website when I got around to it. As far as I am aware registration is not reguired when you submit you TAN number. Nor do I think it impacts on the copy of LR you get, as Adobe's download will change at the introduction of a new version, so you have no choice but to get the newest version. I understood from a question/answer I asked Leica Kunderservice some two years ago, that when you put your camera serial number on Leica's " Kundenbereich " website, it is automatically registered. jaapv Posted May 12, 2015 Share #47 Posted May 12, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Possibly, however, I have used years-old TAN numbers to register then- current Lightroom versions. As long as one does not request the serial number from Leica, it seems there is no link between the two.
cbretteville Posted May 12, 2015 Share #48 Posted May 12, 2015 I have been happy to pay for upgrades to LR since the v1 to v2 upgrade. Adobe gave me a license to LR when it first shipped as promised to all paying users of Rawshooter Pro which Adobe acquired. I have not expected any freebees after the initial license. I have happily paid for the upgrades as I have been happy with what Adobe has done with the program. Now I subscribe to the LR+PS plan from Adobe. No issues with upgrades at all they are just made available to me. Best, Carl
dkmoore Posted May 12, 2015 Share #49 Posted May 12, 2015 Hello all! I purchased my M240 over a year ago but never downloaded the Lightroom software as I already had the latest version 5. When Lightroom 6 was released I contacted Leica and asked nicely if my free download could apply to the new Lightroom 6 and they nicely said yes. My recommendation is to give them a call as they may oblige you.
Jennifer Posted May 12, 2015 Share #50 Posted May 12, 2015 I registered my M240 last June but never used the TAN as I already had a copy of LR5 on both my desktop and laptop. When LR6 was released I simply contacted Leica quoting my TAN and the s/n of my M240 and they emailed me a license number which allowed me to download a full version of LR6 direct from the Adobe website. microview Posted May 12, 2015 Share #51 Posted May 12, 2015 If you have LR5 the upgrade is hardly expensive. However, various forum members have felt they found little or no gains with moving to LR6: see 'Lightroom 6 due later today' in digital post processing forum. hoppyman Posted May 13, 2015 Share #52 Posted May 13, 2015 When you buy a Leica M type 240, then you are getting two licences, correct?? Then if one has already been used a year ago and in case the other one is to be used now, would we get an LR6? If you have not used your licence provided through Leica Camera then you would now get a serial number for LR6. Leica Camera announced the version change within a couple of days of the official Adobe release of LR6. The somewhat confusing wording from Leica Camera does not mean you are entitled to two licences. It means that you may download the program through Leica Camera twice. Still the same single licence. In fact what you need is the serial number and that may be used to licence any download of Lightroom. You do not need to download through Leica Camera at all. A perpetual licence for Lightroom whether obtained with your Leica purchase, a retail purchase or from Adobe directly is exactly the same product and has the same conditions. You are entitled to free UPDATES, which means point improvements to the same version, for example 5.5 to 5.7, not free perpetual UPGRADES to each new version. You do however qualify for discounted purchase of UPGRADES to the next version for example LR5 to LR6.
Jeff S Posted May 13, 2015 Share #53 Posted May 13, 2015 Keep in mind that future upgrade costs apply to different LR 'versions' only, e.g. LR 5, LR 6, LR 7, etc….but typically there are multiple interim 'upgrades', e.g., LR 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, etc….and these are free. LR 5, for instance, is now up to 5.7, and has various improvements over earlier LR 5 iterations, without charge. Jeff

When LR6 was released I simply contacted Leica quoting my TAN and the s/n of my M240 and they emailed me a license number which allowed me to download a full version of LR6 direct from the Adobe website. I find this to be unfair and so typical Leica. Because I didn't email Leica I got LR5, you emailed them and got LR6. No big deal really, but I think it would be nice from Leica to start treating the silent majority of owners fairly and equally with the vocal ones. LeicaFFM Posted May 13, 2015 Share #58 Posted May 13, 2015 Still getting LR5 That's odd... There seems to be no logic in all of this. I probably just got lucky.

I had LR5, and upgraded my M9 to an M-P by the end of March, with which I got a TAN number. I tried it just a week ago...... and was offered LR6 by Leica That said, I find LR6 not yet finalized, as subject to a lot of bugs. Thus, I went back to LR5 yesterday evening, waiting for these bugs to be solved.....
leicahg Posted May 13, 2015 Author Share #60 Posted May 13, 2015 From all the answers received, based on actual experience of all Leica colleagues in this forum, I still insist that it is the main responsibility of the software provider (Leica) to issue a statement to existing owners of Leica cameras and to clarify "What the existing owner of a Leica gets or does NOT get"! whether through using s/n or TAN, first time or second time, before/after announcement of LR6!!! It is a complete confusion!!!!
