Amanda -

You've been with us for over a decade, but we seldom see your photos.  Please show us more.

I haven’t always owned Leica’s in that time. But I just got a new to me M240. So I’ll be around again!

The first time I visited Fort Point in San Francisco, years ago, I thought, "This would be a great place to do a portrait shoot." So I finally made it happen. I asked my neighbor to pose for me and we drove over there last Sunday. This shot was taken with an M10 Monochrom and 50mm Summilux.

One question: I found it super hard to focus in the dim light inside the fort. I was trying to shoot wide open (f/1.4 or 2 on the 50mm, f/2 on a 75) both because there's not much light, and I wanted very defocused backgrounds. I was using a Visoflex, and I had focus peaking turned on, but I missed the focus on probably half my shots. Big disappointment. Have you had a similar experience? I'm ready to admit that it was partly my fault, but still, there was red from the focus peaking in her eyes, and nevertheless the shots were soft.

So, have you found that a Visoflex and focus peaking works well? Or is it better to use a Visoflex without focus peaking and just rely on the sharpness of the image you see in the EVF? Or forget the Visoflex altogether and just use the rangefinder? I have to find a different approach for the next time, because this approach did not work out. (I know I could have stopped down, but for creative purposes didn't want to.)

That's exactly what I do when the light is scarce. That's the main advantage of a rangefinder, for me. You may have to be creative finding horizontal (for portrait shots) edges at the right distance, though.

I see that the ground in front of your model is quite sharp. I often find that using small structures on the ground can be nicely used for focus peaking. Focus so that the model is in the middle of the area on the ground which is highlighted by focus peaking.  But I still prefer using a rangefinder when I have one at hand.

I tend to use the 10x magnification with my 50/1 Noctilux because its slightly lower contrast usually defeats the focus peaking.  I'm talking more about the SL2-S, which has such an excellent EVF rather than the M10 and Noctilux pairing for which I stick with the OVF alone (old habits die hard).  I hope this helps.

Pete.

Candid Portrait - Maybe this could have been posted into the Street Photography section because Street is unposed and candid. Some of my "candid human" series tend to look like portraits so I am conflicted and blurring the lines here.

Ken, you are right. Many pics fit in both. For that reason I get lazy and just post in 'Other'. 😉

I never like 'categories', just the images.

This is a first-rate portrait in every regard: Lighting, pose, expression, clothes, model and background. Super job, jakontil.
