As old user of Leicameter MR for years before M6, I would like to share the thing that non-user has no idea 😌. - with M6, the red LED can be counter-productive when framing, so some may take the battery out - with MR, the M-A (or M4, M3, etc.) has the VF uncluttered or blinking red LED and those (for me important) complete bottom frame lines - changing speed setting with the MR is easier with bigger wheel As side note, I now would use the MR as another hand held meter, leaving it in my pocket and use it when required. 1

glogulus Posted September 17, 2021 Share #1002 Posted September 17, 2021 (edited) Is it normal for there to be a “bzzt” kind of sound when shutter speeds are set 1/4 or slower? This is my first film camera and I’m not sure if it’s supposed to be like this or if I’ve finally found something wrong with my camera.. Edit: Ahh looks like it might be normal based on this post. Whew! Edited September 17, 2021 by glogulus
poli Posted September 17, 2021 Share #1003 Posted September 17, 2021 Yes it is normal. It is the beauty of fine mechanics.
alainD Posted September 18, 2021 Share #1004 Posted September 18, 2021 The reason I like the M-A is that the viewfinder is not cluttered with LEDs and the frame lines are more complete… The Leicameter is an add on that I find very esthetic (especially in black), but I understand it is not everybody’s taste. Not sure I will actually use it or not, time will tell. Alain

Michael Geschlecht Posted September 19, 2021 Share #1006 Posted September 19, 2021 (edited) Hello Alain, Welcome to the Forum. An additional aspect of an MR4 meter is that if you decide to not use it you can either leave it on the camera & not use it or simply remove it from the camera. And you can change your mind as many times as you want to. Even in the middle of a roll of film. The only precaution is to make sure that the meter you have is adjusted to the specific camera that you are using it with so that the meter does not abrade the top cover of the camera when you are taking it off or putting it on.. There have been a number of Threads discussing this & what to do. Including recently. By the way the meter also makes a perfectly good hand held meter. It has a sensitivity range of EV2 to EV18 with a film rated at ISO 100/21. That means from f2 @ 1 second to f16 @ 1/1000 with an ISO 100/21 film. A reasonable range for what is needed for a wide range of situations. Enjoy your camera & meter. LocalHero1953 Posted September 19, 2021 Share #1007 Posted September 19, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) For many years I had a M2 and then M3 which I coupled first with a MC and then MR4 meter - I just got used to the combination. Now, having just acquired a M4, I may have to add a meter to it - not for exposure metering, but because it won't feel 'right' without it🤔. 1

I wrongly supposed it was a black MR meter, but indeed it is the more recent MR4, with the button on the top. The engraving in the back says “Leica METER MR”, hence my confusion. Thank you for pointing this. Waiting to receive a battery + voltage adapter to try it. In the meantime, I’m using a Gossen hand held meter. Alain Welcome, dear visitor! Michael Geschlecht Posted September 19, 2021 Share #1009 Posted September 19, 2021 Hello Alain, Basically the MR & MR4 meters are the same . The primary difference is the placement of the activating switch for measuring the light. For many people the MR is a little easier to activate while looking thru the range/viewfinder window. The placement of the switch on the MR4 is to make it less likely to interact with the angled rewind of the M4 camera. Most likely the reason for adding a "4" at the end of "MR". The other controls, like the battery test slide on the front & the hi range & low range button on the top, remained pretty much the same. The 50mm Nokton II and 28mm Ultron II are both rock-solid and a fantastic physical size on my M-A. Well balanced and easy to focus. Welcome, dear visitor! Really love the 50mm Nokton II and I just picked a CV 21mm 3.5 ASPH. to go with it.
glogulus Posted September 30, 2021 Share #1012 Posted September 30, 2021 I just got back the scans for the very first roll of film through the M-A (or ever actually). There were many many underexposed images. But, the ones that came out where so nice. The colors and grain looked amazing. Even for digital scans. This is gonna be a great new direction in my hobby. I’m glad I took the dive into film!

Best Regards, Michael I had a meter with me but never having used it before I don’t think I was metering the right spots when I was in certain lighting situations. I was also relying on the aperature ring to control the light and I sometimes forgot to change it when moving from shadow to light. I guess having only used digital cameras has made me spoiled and I need to be a bit more on my toes! I just have to pay a bit more attention to what I’m doing. Still loads of fun though! Edit: I’m pretty sure my biggest mistake was forgetting there is NO auto-iso :). I never realized how much I relied on that on my digital Ms,. a.noctilux Posted October 2, 2021 Share #1017 Posted October 2, 2021 Happily, we don't have/need auto-iso on M-A ... Using color negatives can behave (almost, in the large tolerance of film) like auto-iso but in narrow range.
