Well, if I post a picture on Flickr for example of the New York Skyline then I name the picture "New York Skyline" and if I post a picture of my Leica MP then I name that picture "Leica MP". So I would assume that you'll get a lot of equipment pictures if you search by "Leica"...

Errrr, yes....true. Very good point. What do you read from the differences in ratio for different camera brands then?

The M2 mechanicals were all hand fitted. The M-A is not.

All this means is that the manufacture of parts when the M2 was manufactured was not precise enough. Adjustment points were built in to these early cameras so that the parts in each camera could be massaged to work together.

With the M-A this is no longer necessary.

To be entirely honest I find that the M-A is just as precise in actual use as is my M3.

To be honest, being underwhelmed is actually a common reaction to the M-A. But that reaction is not caused by any lower quality of product in the M-A, but by the fact that the M-A is just as wonderful as any M3, M2 or other wonderful Leica film camera built over the past sixty or so years.

The other really nice thing is that you can use any one of Leica's M cameras you want. And if you want a new one you have that option available to you.

  • 2 weeks later...

Having bought the black M-A in December 2014, finally I succumbed and bought a silver M-A to go with it. One for black and white, one for colour film. Indulgent I know. And for the price of this new M-A I could have bought a new MP, or some very mint and pretty older kit. But I can't get past the ultimate refinement of the M-A, and to have a pair of Leica film cameras, both mine brand new, was worth it.

Congratulations.

Since getting my first M-A a year and a bit ago, I also feel the desire to trade in a pair of M6s for a second M-A.

It seems such a marginal thing to do - but one of these days I probably will.

Nothing wrong, except the cable is useless without a tripod, or at least a surface to rest the camera, whereas hand-held the self-timer releases the shutter without your finger jerking the camera.

Interesting... by using the Timer for reducing shake in hand-held shots it is, in effect, adding to the speed of whatever lens you're using.

I'm only curious but are any of the black M-As beginning to show wear? If so, how does it look?

br

Philip

The two of mine (chrome and black chrome), no wear in one year of use.

I am sure that they would wait for long before the black chrome show what's inside, beautiful brass or ugly tin ?

The wear on mine has a silvery grey appearance, not brass.

It is showing on the edge of the top cover from rewinding the film and on the back edge of the top cover where I flick the film advance lever. It is also showing where the metal ring of the strap rubs on each side.

Don't worry, the top plate is brass. What you are seeing is the plating applied before the final black anodising (Eloxal) process.

There is one on EBAY US at a pretty decent price as well.

Everyone has their own needs and an M-A may not fit that need.

I do know for myself that a lot of my cameras will go up for sale before I would even consider selling the M-A.

That was probably mine.  I feel the same way about my Zeiss Ikon ZM.

Like a M4-P, then.

I agree. I love my ZI. Unfortunately I didn't use it quite as often in 2015 since I was spending a lot of time working with the M-A. They are both awesome cameras. I still strongly believe that no one has ever bettered the ZI viewfinder, and likely never will now.

With deteriorating eyesight, I put my M7 and MP on the closet shelf and switched to the ZI because of the rangefinder. You're correct, the viewfinder is clearly better than anything on an M camera. After using the ZI, looking through an M finder is akin to peeping through a keyhole.
