You can't check exactly but that serial number would suggest the camera is a fairly early one.

MarkP Posted May 20, 2019 Share #763 Posted May 20, 2019 (edited) According to Leica Wiki, wit that sn, it is indeed a 2002 camera. https://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-wiki.en/index.php/M7 Edited May 20, 2019 by MarkP
tap360 Posted May 20, 2019 Share #764 Posted May 20, 2019 So reading around it has the older finder and DX coding. Presume that in practice that is not something I need worry about too much, given price?

I had both upgraded during a service and, apart from a very slight improvement in the viewfinder, I noticed no difference.

The best M IMO because the faster as said Depardon the Magnum photographer I have one M7 with gold contacts and I have no problem it works like a clock under snowy - 15°C Alps and under + 41°C Asian humanitarian missions ** https://www.leica-camera-france.fr/occasion/leica-m7 Edited May 20, 2019 by Doc Henry
tap360 Posted May 20, 2019 Share #767 Posted May 20, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks all the the advice...I am tempted by a used MP, but around £1k more than this M7. I could afford but guess I risk more depreciation with MP, which does matter to me.
tap360 Posted May 21, 2019 Share #768 Posted May 21, 2019 So, in the end I just purchased an M4 for £1200 that just came into Ffordes overnight, looks lovely condition and complete with original box and paperwork etc plus a nice burgundy case. Has a dealer 6m warranty. If it isn’t as good as it appears I can return or if I struggle without AE I will maybe come back to that M7. Thanks for all the feedback, can’t wait to get it now!! May need to think about a sweet lens to go with it (I have a 50 Lux and 28 summaron but no 28mm framelines of course!)
hektor Posted May 21, 2019 Share #769 Posted May 21, 2019 Good news tap360. There is nothing wrong with an M4. The advantage of not having a 28mm frame is the image in the viewfinder is a decent size. I have the 0.85 in my M7 a la wheelbarrow, and when using the Tri-Elmar-M just approximate outside the 35mm frame lines. The alternative is the excellent OVU from Voigtländer, the original Leica being ridiculously expensive. Have lots of fun.

I would second all of that and if you feel that you need a clip on meter, go for the Voigtlander VC Meter II.

tap360 Posted June 4, 2019 Share #774 Posted June 4, 2019 Is it worth paying a premium do you think for an M7 with the latest viewfinder? Once has come up at a dealer but its £500 more than the older one I was looking at but seems quite a bit newer (SN 332xxxx) plus dealer warranty? pico Posted June 4, 2019 Share #775 Posted June 4, 2019 In my experience the earlier finder is fine.

You need an exposure meter, could be a Leicameter MR or from any other maker, even cellphone apps can do it. With early M6 cameras occasionally issues are known with the black chrome. I still keep two M6 cameras, built 1986 and 1991, both working still as expected. The above mentioned M2 or M4 are of course excellent options. Any thoughts on M4 vs anniversary edition M4-P (which seems to be a bit cheaper)

I also did not know which M4, but at the end I took a black M4 and for sure I do not regret it at all. Maybe it is a bit more discreet in comparison the the M4-P, no red Leica sign etc. For sure both are great cameras, let your heart decide..... mr35mm Posted November 26, 2019 Share #780 Posted November 26, 2019 Hi, first of all sorry for my bad english 😞 My name is Murat, i live in Istanbul and i'm a M7 freak 🙂 I've owned some M7's during the years (Black-Silver - 0.72 - 0.85) but newer owned a NEW Leica M7. Few weeks ago i went to the Leica Store in Istanbul and saw a brand new black Leica M7 for sale. I 've asked them if it is really brand new, they told me yes, brandnew and unused. The price was very high 😞 Then i have asked for discount ………. and then…… :-))) Welcome, dear visitor!
