Rick Posted June 30, 2014 Share #61 Posted June 30, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) A short(?) review of the new firmware: 1) The Horizon Level is now enabled to superimpose over the LV-scene image. The menu option "Horizon" has a choice that enables this feature. This is one of my favorite new additions and it has been very handy when shooting my WATE. Once set up in the menu it is easily deployed by pressing the INFO button. Previously, it could only be shown on a blank screen and for me was unusable this way. 2) AUTO ISO is now available in Manual Mode (manual selection of shutter speeds). This is a great feature that was on previous digital M cameras and was changed on how it worked on the M240. I missed this a lot on the new M240 and just thought it seemed broken. Now, in the menu you can to choose if, you want the new AUTO ISO in M mode (to continue to change the ISO in response to changes you make in shutter speed) when, the Set menu choice (or ISO button) is set in "AUTO ISO in M mode" to "On." Hurray! Maximum exposure time now allows up to 4 x f. Also, the ISO button shows all ISO settings at a glance - very nice addition. 3) Crop marks are now shown superimposed on the LCD screen when the up or down arrow is pressed. I like that not only 16:9 video aspect ratio is displayed to help line up the video before the record button is pressed, but also a host of other aspect ratios are available. I like the square aspect ratio and have been enjoying visualizing some shots like this. 4) A setting was added to disable the "M" button on the deck of the camera so recording can't be accidentally started when in a camera bag or from an accidental press. Also, those that never wanted video on their M can no disable it and pretend it isn't there. 5) A classic mode is available for those that don't want to use the LCD and don't want to accidentally hit the LV button. Some of you guys are going to get your wish and have a more classic M. Put some tape over the EVF port and the LCD screen and pretend you got a film M. Something for everyone. 6) One nice function, EF control with the thumbwheel is an option in the menu. It was difficult to press the front button and turn the thumbwheel. Now, a more direct and easier way to simply change EV is allowed. Works really well and I know a lot of members have written that this was a big one. (I don't use EV comp, but that is for another discussion). Really nice response from Leica to a much requested and logical request. I bet Edward is pretty happy now. 7) Permanent Exposure simulation is new. Now the LCD can display the exposure all the time without having to half press the shutter release. Nice for video and for all around use. This new feature works all the way down to 1/30 of a second. If, you want to see the exposure bellow 1/30 second, then you will have to use the choice of "release button half pressed." I've switched to this as my default mode. 8) A nice fix, the exposure bracketing now stick when you turn the camera off. This was most annoying and made this feature previously unusable, for me. Maybe, now I'll experiment a little with HDR although, another set or two of brackets need to be added by Leica. 9) The LV lock-ups we experienced in hot environments has now been fixed. I am not sure how extensively this could be tested in a short period of time, but none of the Beta testers experienced a lock-up. I'm pretty sure there will be some reports of lock-ups as low batteries, multiple button presses, continuous mode, and memory cards or who knows what seem to plague some people from time to time. 10) LV focus peaking has some new colors. I seem to still like red. Maybe, there will be a circumstance I'll change this? 11) EXIF data issues that most probably were never aware of were fixed. This does cause LR and other programs to not report things like the lens information now. Auto Lens Detect in LR does not work after this FW update. Adobe has said they will update their side of this to resolve the changes made by Leica. It should be in the next Adobe LR update. 12) My screw mount lenses now work with LV! Yeah. 13) I don't use GPS or the grip, but updates to the location issues with JPEG have been addressed. Other cameras delete the location when there is no GPS signal and leave the EXIF data field blank, Leica chose to use the last location instead. Now, the location is deleted after 5min if no GPS signal is present. Somebody else will have to comment on this. 14) The sensor cleaning bug and a several others are now fixed. Some other stuff is in this FW as well. All in all I found this a pretty impressive and extensive FW update. I find it makes an already solid camera just that much better and the added features were extremely welcome additions. Recommended. I have hopes Leica is getting settled in their new location and that this is just the beginning of more good things to come. Rick
Advertisement Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 Hi Rick, Take a look here Release of 2.0.1.5 Firmware Update. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jrh68uk Posted June 30, 2014 Share #62 Posted June 30, 2014 Loaded up and all seems well. Apart, that is, from the bug I mentioned here: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m-type-240/321004-info-display-bug.html My own fault for not reporting it, I suppose (despite saying I would). It must be that no-one else has noticed but it's easily re-creatable. Anyway... it's made up for by the fact that with auto ISO I can now set 1/(2xf). Hurrah! That I was wishing for but wasn't expecting.
Albert Andersen Posted June 30, 2014 Share #63 Posted June 30, 2014 Anyone downloading to a Mac? I get the following message: File not found. Please insert memory card with correct firmware file I have downloaded to my Mac without any problems.
bocaburger Posted June 30, 2014 Share #64 Posted June 30, 2014 Here is the official list of improvements: A “Video off” option is now available in the Set menu (see submenu item “Video recording”). The M-Button on the Top-cover is deactivated when this option is chosen. New Light Metering Mode “Classic / LV disabled”In this mode, only Classic light-metering is possible; the LV button is disabled to avoid the activation of live view by accident. Hallelujah! The rest of the update is insignificant to me but those two I will set and truly appreciate. [*]Live view is now possible with every lens (including older screw lenses via an adapter) using “manual lens detection” I don't quite understand...live view has always been possible with every lens I've got including screw lenses with adapters. I have the camera set permanently to automatic lens detection and with those lenses it says "UNCODED" and live view worked. I'll give it a week or two to see if people find any gruesome bugs and then happily update!
jaques Posted June 30, 2014 Share #65 Posted June 30, 2014 I have downloaded to my Mac without any problems. the days of the old 'mac -windows- compatibility issue' seem to be mostly over... thank God.

I have the camera set permanently to automatic lens detection and with those lenses it says "UNCODED" and live view worked. I am guessing you are using modern adapter rings without cutouts like the older Leitz ones? This issue affected the older rings and if it is true that it is now solved: this firmware just saved me around $400 in new rings I was just about to buy! genefama Posted June 30, 2014 Share #68 Posted June 30, 2014 Do you have to tell the camera you're going to be using auto ISO in manual mode as opposed to aperture priority mode? Why add an "option"? Why not just fix the existing Auto ISO setting? And does this mean that if you switch from A to M or vice versa while you're shooting that you have to reset the ISO mode? Sorry but that's a half fix. jaques Posted June 30, 2014 Share #69 Posted June 30, 2014 just had a look at the improved lens selection list. Don't see much change there other than more lenses? I was hoping it would have the actual lens names there- or hope against hope- that it would be customisable for my own lenses! Next time please Leica.
Numinous Images Posted June 30, 2014 Share #70 Posted June 30, 2014 Those are some nice updates. But, Leica should allow us to assign the Video button to something else, not just turn it off. A button on the top of the camera that does nothing???? IF that button reset the camera to the "USER1" settings it would be a great, fast way to get back to your most used settings after changing everything for one situation. Let's keep improving - thanks Leica
jaques Posted June 30, 2014 Share #71 Posted June 30, 2014 What is the "correction cleaning function matrix" fix? don't know but it sounds sinister... some type of new NSA mass surveillance method?

jaapv Posted June 30, 2014 Share #74 Posted June 30, 2014 Do you have to tell the camera you're going to be using auto ISO in manual mode as opposed to aperture priority mode? Why add an "option"? Why not just fix the existing Auto ISO setting? And does this mean that if you switch from A to M or vice versa while you're shooting that you have to reset the ISO mode? Sorry but that's a half fix. Because there are quite a few photographers using the system that existed before. It is not a good idea to "fix" something for one group of users and to take it away from another group. As for myself, I use both systems, depending on the way I am using the camera.

jaques Posted June 30, 2014 Share #76 Posted June 30, 2014 You may be assimilated if you use it... However Leica made some corrections to the dust detecting algorithms. it would be awesome if such dust algorithms could be used to subtract dust from a picture in camera? Like dark frame subtraction... optional setting of course...

bocaburger Posted June 30, 2014 Share #79 Posted June 30, 2014 I am guessing you are using modern adapter rings without cutouts like the older Leitz ones? This issue affected the older rings and if it is true that it is now solved: this firmware just saved me around $400 in new rings I was just about to buy! No they are all old Leitz-brand adapters. The 9cm ones I used on my wide-angle CV lenses do not have cut outs, but those I self-coded. The ones on my CV 12mm and 75mm do have the cutouts but live view worked ok. I'm thinking it could be because the lens flanges on CV lenses are mirror-finish, so maybe they are reflective enough to satisfy the code reader despite the added distance??? The only old Leitz lens I have with an adapter is a collapsible 50 Cron, and I have not tried it on the M240 yet.
lct Posted June 30, 2014 Author Share #80 Posted June 30, 2014 Do you have to tell the camera you're going to be using auto ISO in manual mode as opposed to aperture priority mode? Why add an "option"? Why not just fix the existing Auto ISO setting? And does this mean that if you switch from A to M or vice versa while you're shooting that you have to reset the ISO mode? Sorry but that's a half fix. Not sure if i see what you mean as i am a recent user of auto iso in manual mode actually but there was nothing to fix here as i understand it. Auto iso did work in auto mode only previously. Now you can use it in manual mode additionally. Suffice it to set your shutter speed dial to any speed to enter in auto + manual mode and to revert to the "A" position to enter in auto + auto mode again. Am i missing something?
