I can't see pictures of bananas without thinking of Andy Warhol. Or the Velvet Underground.

That brings back some memories! Over forty years ago, my father-in-law's last naval posting was as the Captain in charge of the Royal Naval College.

So glad to be able to trigger such memories.  This image was from 2004 when most of the College was used by the University of Greenwich and Trinity College.  The Painted Hall was shared and also open for public bookings.  One of the most interesting things about the College is the number of times it has appeared in films and TV programmes to represent scenes from the early 20thC as there are shooting angles available that don't seem to have changed.  The history of course goes back a long way, as the names of the buildings (William, Mary, Anne and Charles) suggest.  I worked in a building called Dreadnought, named after a hospital ship that had previously moored nearby on the Thames.  We were certain there were ghosts in the cellars.  No pictures to prove that unfortunately.

Having recently been handed a package of glass slides from the 30s and 40s along with Kodachromes from the 50s and 60s, I am very aware of just how important photography has been for documenting (and triggering memories of) social history.
