Except you can't. Because there aren't any. Anywhere. At all.

No they couldn't. That would mean designing an entirely new camera.

With this type of design (fixed lens) the sensor and lens are essentially a single unit, the sensor being attached to the rear of the lens.

Leica have taken the existing X platform and bolted a zoom lens on instead (almost certainly with a different sensor as well).

I did say they could have - but missed the opportunity to do so, and they could still do it.

I didn't mention how it could be done,

I wonder if many here ever stop to consider that the total membership of this and other similar forums is but a small percentage of Leica's worldwide customer base!

Leica are familiar with the forum of course, take note of us from time to time and even use some members for beta testing but they do not build cameras solely to satisfy us. They build products that they believe will sell based upon their extensive knowledge of their business, and from that point of view a Vario seems like a sensible extension of the X range.

As for high prices, well like it or loathe it these days Leica is a luxury brand as much as it is a niche, high-end camera company and 'budget' models just don't fit in that mix (in recent times, when were Leica's ever competitive on price compared to other brands).

This arguement doesnt quite wash in that you can get compact APS-c cameras like the X-E1 with interchangeable lenses with a faster zoom of the same range for half the money. To add the restriction of having a fixed lens to make it more exclusive or unique simply isnt really valid.

Is that not just a semantic distinction though Jono? In so far as there are other 'better' interchangeable lens APS-C cameras where one could leave a zoom lens on, thus creating a semi-fixed zoom camera? And if so does the semi-fixed (ie interchangeable) not have the advantage of being, you know, interchangeable?

Well of course - I rather like my OMD with the 12-35 panasonic . . . . . but this camera isn't aimed at you, and nor is it aimed at me or the captain. It's aimed at people like, for instance, my wife - who is a good photographer, has shot lots if film in her time and understands all the photographic basics, but who would sooner die than read a camera review and certainly doesn't want to wade through the menu system of an OMD or a Fuji.

Basically it's aimed at someone who knows about photography, but who isn't a camera geek. . . . and there are precious few people like that around here :)

My APS-C camera knowledge is limited. (edit - wasn' the R1 launched in 2006? And had a quicker lens?)

2005 I think - the lens was faster, but the camera was also much bigger .

There are, I was contacted last week by a dealer with a black M that had my name on it. (Sadly I had to ask them to let it go to someone else and slide me down the waiting list :( - I'm a bit strapped for the time being).

On a positive note, if someone wants a zoom point and shoot and wants build quality (hopefully this will be good, he says fingers crossed), better than average IQ (Assuming the Lens achieves this), is not price sensitive and covets the LEICA brand then maybe they're on to something.

I am just not sure I know many that fit that bill. It is obviuosly pitched between the X2 and M, but I was thinking/hoping more APSC M with EVF and a Leica lens (sort of cheaper again Summarit with or without the camera to provide options) M bayonet fitting so you could put a toe in the water use the best glass. Maybe the lack of AF kills the quasi rangefinder in the modern world.

Good Luck Leica, I hope it is well recieved even though I don't undersand the market fit.

There's an old adage that a "fool and his money are easily parted" Well Leica will have to hope so. There will quite obviously be some people that will happily hand over this money without a thought or care, because it's got a Red Dot on it, but a great many more might be happy to spend this sort of money on a camera, but not without at least doing some comparative research. Also I would suggest, that a good number of them would have ,at the very least a basic knowledge re specification, I.e. apertures etc. A good proportion of those people, might also look at forums, and If they were to venture onto this one, they would be dissuaded away from this camera, as the majority of Leica "Fans" have expressed disapproval or disappointment with regards this " much anticipated" release.

It wouldn't take a genius to work out that far better can be had for far less, so Leica will have to rely on that end of the market that dont look too hard or think about how they spend thier money.

Marketing might have been better used to eventually reveal that reality exceeded the expectation, having managed the opposite it had better sell, otherwise they have scored a costly own goal.
