Congratulations on being reunited with a D2, Bill, I feel sure you'll put it to good use and thoroughly enjoy using it!

Probably my only gripe about the D2 is how long it takes to write raw files to card but that problem goes away if one sticks to only shooting jpegs as I feel sure you're already aware.

Pete.

I usually shoot raw, but many on here think the ooc jpgs are a particular feature of the camera. I’ll try both. And patience is such a virtue in our busy world..... 5 seconds for a raw file to write?  Pah.... I remember having to wait 6 minutes for “Charlie Chucky Egg” to load from a tape to a high flying Sinclair  computer....

I remember the same with my ZX Spectrum and you'd often get the blue and red stripey, shakey screen that confirmed that data was loading until the very last moment and you'd have to start loading again.  A great way to learn patience ... and learning how to find something else to do.😄

Ha.  All planned really - by the tea planters.  Plenty of additional time to brew another cuppa! :D

I've delayed responding to what I feel is an unnecessary and dismissive comment to let my irritation subside.

Perhaps it escaped your notice that this 143-page thread has been running since 2007.  X1 pictures are doubtless worthy of note but to place such a comment in this thread is deeply patronising to all those people who have supported this thread with examples of Digilux 2 pictures with their distinctive look for the past 12 years by posting their pictures here.

You might not see Digilux 2 pictures as being anything out of the ordinary, which is your right of course, by there are many hundreds of members who disagree with you and have freely shared examples here to show why.

I loved my D2 for the ergonomics, the manual controls, that wonderful lens, I even liked the EVF that so few agree about. I don’t understand why LEICA didn’t bring out a new version taking advantage of new technologies. However, no after how much I loved the D2 I can’t go back with its limitations. I now use an X-pro2, it is the closest I can get to theD2 ways of working. However, I can’t honestly say that the images were any better on the D2. I doubt anyone could differentiate them from the Fuji in a blind test.

From a few years ago in Brussels.I shot this also with other cameras almost every time I visited the flea market. However, last year it was complete changed.

I picked up a Digilux 2 in absolutely mint condition from a local online marketplace this week. The body is pristine - and the sensor is functioning without issue. It looks and acts brand new. The problem is that I feel rather silly having a *second* D2 just sitting on the shelf as a backup, especially since I am extremely lucky to count on a number of bodies and lenses for this never-ending addiction, erm, I mean....hobby.

I think I am obsessed with this camera, even though it is sometimes maddeningly frustrating to use. So many technological advancements that have been made in the many years since the D2's release. I have actually bought this camera three times - first as an LC1 that eventually died, then as a D2, and now this newest addition.

The slow RAW buffer, erratic autofocus, crappy electronic viewfinder, shutter lag, and small file sizes all would be fatal flaws for any digital camera in 2020. However, the black and white conversions from this sensor and lens are really something - it feels more like film than any other camera I have used. I think that if every other camera stopped functioning, I could somehow wrangle greatness from this limited camera (as long as I had daylight).

I am so glad that this thread has continued for so many years. Now, what to do with the backup? Sell it or hang onto it like some tech hoarder?

If both D2 cameras have their original lcd screens, a camera for spares might extend the life of the other one. Mine was replaced by Leica while spares were still available. As to slowness of operation, isn't that a virtue sometimes?

I also have two Digilux 2's; I decided some time ago that I should find a second in case the first one failed and Digilux 2's were no longer available by that time and it's a modest outlay.  The first would also act as spare parts after it failed.

The thing that is probably of more concern is if/when batteries become unavailable.  I acquired a few new D2 batteries and they've been occupying a corner in my deep freeze ever since 'waiting for the day'.

I just found these pics from 12 years ago of my loved Luca. I think the D2 was (is) a very special camera, love those BW tones. Look much nicer if you open them on flickr.
