tappan Posted March 6, 2013 Share #1 Posted March 6, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Let's say that a very old lens (50mm collapsible) needs some CLA. What are the advantages and disadvantages of sending to a place like Dagg Camera Repair over Leica NJ or Solms? Price? Speed? Thanks, Mark
Advertisement Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 Hi tappan, Take a look here RE: Lens CLA. DAG or Leica ?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
TomB_tx Posted March 6, 2013 Share #2 Posted March 6, 2013 DAG is generally both faster and less expensive, and excellent quality. I sent him a lens last week, and he indicated currently running about 3-wks for the job; but you should check with him first as the workload can change rapidly. I don't know how things go at Leica now. I last sent them a camera at least 20 yrs ago.
A miller Posted March 6, 2013 Share #3 Posted March 6, 2013 I would suggest Youxin Ye. You'll get it back within a few days and he is really an expert. I purchased a mint M3 from him that he completely reconditioned. I am very happy. He is very fair and true to his word. He is also very accessible and it doesn't hurt to look him up on google and call and talk to him about your needs. Vintage lenses are right up his alley. Good luck!

I just sent her a lens for cleaning on Feb. 27 and -- perhaps it was luck to hit a trough in her workload -- she finished the job on March 3.

I have two M3's in great working condition thanks to his fine workmanship...
CalArts 99 Posted April 28, 2013 Share #6 Posted April 28, 2013 I use Don (DAG.) He's not only skilled but also a very intelligent guy, too. Here's an interesting story about his father, Norman Goldberg (and a bit about Don himself at the very end of the article): LEICA Barnack Berek Blog: M2-250 - A LEICA FEW HAVE EVER SEEN

kokoshawnuff Posted April 28, 2013 Share #8 Posted April 28, 2013 If the lens just needs lubrication or something simple send it to Youxin Yi, he will be fast and cheap. If it needs adjustment or deep cleaning of elements, send it to DAG who will be under a month and reasonably cheap. Sending the lens to Leica will take 8-10 weeks and be very expensive. Also the technicians at Leica don't see too many collapsible vintage lenses, so I would hazard to guess DAG or Youxin (or Sherry) are probably more experienced with such a lens than Leica themselves
dritz Posted April 28, 2013 Share #9 Posted April 28, 2013 Another vote for Sherry Krauter for lenses. She did two vintage lenses for me, one with a serious haze problem. They came back sparkling.
CalArts 99 Posted April 28, 2013 Share #10 Posted April 28, 2013 btw, for a CLA and also any extensive lens repair, there is still John Van Stelten as another option. Although I've personally never needed his services, he is highly regarded. Welcome to Focal Point - Lens Repair and Lens Cleaning

What are the advantages and disadvantages of sending to a place like Dagg Camera Repair over Leica NJ or Solms? Price? Speed? Thanks, Mark I have very good experience with DAG. I had my tri-elmar MATE CLA + Fixing the "sticky" frame line problem + 6-bit coding. No complaint. No experience with Leica, bit it is very expectable. I'm sure both would be excellent choices. Price or speed? you can send an email with as much detail as possible, you should get a quick reply. Me personally, if it's likely to require high precision equipment or rarely stocked component, I'd go Leica.
