Just purchased this M4-2 with Nikkor 50/1.4 LTM lens from a friend of mine for a great deal. Adds to my M3, M6, and M7 film camera bodies.

This is a simple question for M4-2 owners:

Do your M4-2 has brass top plate or zinc alloy ?

They are all brass AFAIK, mine is, based on the non flush viewfinder windows.

Have you ever seen M4-2 flush window VF ?

No, never. I know the later M4-P has flush windows while the earlier ones did not, these looked like the M4 and M4-2.

This is the same M4-2 from post #129. I bought it from Huss and here it is paired with a 28 2.8 Elmarit-M ASPH V1 and a recently arrived Voigtlander finder.

That may be one of the most beautiful Ms I have ever seen.  Plus it is an M4-2 with the super rare red dot.  Lovely.

I did buy it from someone who knows how to take care of their gear. The finder came from a 'bay seller in Japan. I placed the order Sunday and it arrived four days latter. On the other hand, the stinky A&A half case is being returned to B&H in New York City. It was sent out on Sunday and has made it as far as Missouri. Same shipper for both.

Since February my M4-2 has been sitting in a repair shop that is going out of business due to health problems. Originally, I was hoping to have a new flash block installed but that didn't happen. When I picked it up, the plastic tip on the advance lever had caught on something and popped the rivet loose. Fortunately, I had just purchaced a solid advance lever from another member. Took it to a different local shop and it took the technician about two  minutes to change it.

I bought mine at a local photographica auction, along with an 85mm Summarex, two different lots. The slow speeds are a bit erratic and the frame counter is stuck at the start point but I can put up with that.

😕

How can my M4-2 be so light, 523g ?

thinking that the cover and base plate made of brass.

Almost 80g less than "same" (well with meter/battery 😉 ) MP at 600g.

Hello Arnaud,

The M4-2 is the replacement for the M4. The M4 weighs 600 grams.

Part of the 77 gram difference is the lack of a self timer mechanism & steel gears (specific gravity 7.85). In place of brass gears (specific gravity 8.56).

Which means the steel gears weigh approximately 92% of what the brass gears do.

Best Regards,

Michael

I was in a camera shop many years ago and the salesperson had a 85 Summarex in the case. When he handed to me, I was quite surprised by its weight. Beautiful lens.
