In praise of the Elmar-M 50mm f2.8

Do others have a small amount of play on the mount (play between the lens hood and mount ) small but results in a small knock ?

I have a silver one. And your description sounds exactly like mine. Shipped it to Solms and it returned as new with no play/knock (and no service fee even if the lens was 10 years old... does this suggest that they define this as a common weakness?).

 

But the tightness lasted only for a while. The knock is back. This "knock" is also so different and distinct compared to any other lens I have...

 

However, I have become used to it... and actually uses it more than my supertight Cron 50.

Agree! I bought a few months ago and really enjoy it - sharp, contrasty and modern. Of course tiny and light. I was so happy with it, I sold my 50 Lux (what?) and trimmed down my 50 to just the Noct V3 and this Elmar M. I used to have the cron v5 (really nice lens) but the Elmar M (to me anyway) is the tiny version that does the same thing except for the difference wide open.

FYI, this links to a comparison I did between the 2.8/50 Elmar-M, 1.4/50 Summilux ASPH and 2.0/50 APO-Summicron.  The Elmar-M holds up very well.

I am just about to buy a silver chrome one in what seems like almost unused condition and am looking forward to using it in just the way you have mentioned. Like you I also have faster glass in various focal lengths but this will be the one that comes with me (often in my coat pocket) for buildings across the field and leisurely rural outings.
