Advertisement Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 Hi charby57, Take a look here In praise of the Elmar-M 50mm f2.8. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
farnz Posted June 20, 2012 Share #42 Â Posted June 20, 2012 about this lens, which I bought used, came a regular rear cap.Is there a specific one, since the elements go further in the back? Pierre, Â I use a recessed metal rear lens cap from that auction site but Leica produced a similar cap for the 21/4 Super Angulon and 28/2.8 Elmarit v1 and v2 but they're more difficult to find and can be offered for silly money. The recessed cap allows the 50/2.8 Elmar's barrel to be fully retracted into the lens cap. Â Pete.

IWC Doppel Posted June 29, 2012 Share #44 Â Posted June 29, 2012 Do others have a small amount of play on the mount (play between the lens hood and mount ) small but results in a small knock ?
skinnfell Posted June 29, 2012 Share #45 Â Posted June 29, 2012 I dont own one, but have lusted after this lens for travel and walking-around pics. I have the summicron type 4 (current optics but separate hood and focus tab) instead which is only 30 grams heavier and is my main lens. Â However, the elmar certainly has its lure by making the camera extremely small and carry-able.
gvaliquette Posted June 30, 2012 Share #46  Posted June 30, 2012 Pierre, I use a recessed metal rear lens cap from that auction site but Leica produced a similar cap for the 21/4 Super Angulon and 28/2.8 Elmarit v1 and v2 but they're more difficult to find and can be offered for silly money. The recessed cap allows the 50/2.8 Elmar's barrel to be fully retracted into the lens cap.  Pete.  Pete, and Pierre,  Why do you want the deep rear lens cap? You are not saving any significant space, and you do have to extend the lens to mount/dismount it!. I use a regular rear lens cap and store the lens extended. Also, it is a little more difficult to extend the lens when it is on a rear cap than on the camera.  By the way, I LOVE my 50 mm Elmar-M. I rushed to buy it new from B&H when it was announced that it was being discontinued and have never regretted it. Although I have a number of other 50s (Summilux v1, Summicron v4, Summitar, Elmar 2.8, Elmar 3.5 - uncoated, and even an Industar) I really cherish my 50 mm, f 2.8 Elmar-M.  Guy
farnz Posted June 30, 2012 Share #47 Â Posted June 30, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Why do you want the deep rear lens cap? ... Guy, Â Only because it seems better protected to me. I suspect that the weakest part of the lens is the extension tube so storing it in a 'normal' depth rear lens cap requires the tube to be partially extended and therefore more vulnerable to lateral torque and shock. Storing the lens extended and locked should be no riskier than a rigid lens but sacrifices the benefit of the lens's compactness. YMMV. Â Pete.
TRIago Posted September 25, 2012 Share #48 Â Posted September 25, 2012 My favorite lens hands down. Some people on this forum say that all the modern Leica lenses have no difference in character and that the only thing that separates them is their max aperture. I think this is the one lens that everyone can agree is a unique performer. Great contrast and deep color saturation (especially blue skies) are a couple of the reasons I like it so much. Â Nice picture. I have one as well(50mm Elmar-M) and I love it.
IWC Doppel Posted September 25, 2012 Share #49 Â Posted September 25, 2012 Yes I have shot a few hundred pictures with it now and Love it. It had a recent trip to Malcolm Taylor for coding and a clean/sdjust and has come back with no discernable play and a fast and buttery smooth focus
jaques Posted September 25, 2012 Share #50 Â Posted September 25, 2012 (edited) Hmmm, I am going to get mine out of the cupboard and give it a whirl... Â Perhaps one of the reasons people love this lens is the sensible 2.8 depth of field = more photos in focus? Â Lenses like this will be even better on the new M if the ISO is much improved as hoped. tobey bilek Posted September 26, 2012 Share #51 Â Posted September 26, 2012 I have the first and recently discontinued second version of the 2.8. I tried my Red Scale 3.5 on the M9 with impressive results. Â Yesterday I took the second version on a local outing. The M9 and that lens are a winning combination. Today I did a real estate shot that had lots of shadow and a white garage door to deal with. 4 shot HDR with 1 stop bracket. Merge in Photoshop CS6 merge to HDR. It is extremely impressive. This was the go to lens on film and remains so on digital. Probably one of the nicest photos I ever made, digital or film. Â I have run comparisons with this lens and the current Summicron. I can not see a difference except for F 2.0 being missing. Â One day I will try the first 50 2.8 from 1955. It is a fine lens except it not as good as the later version at 2.8. Â The old Rigid Summicron is nothing to disparage on the M9 either.
Messsucherkamera Posted September 27, 2012 Share #52 Â Posted September 27, 2012 Really nice images, everyone! Â I have been poking at the idea of getting an Elmar 50; perhaps it is time to cease poking and commence buying.
IWC Doppel Posted September 27, 2012 Share #53  Posted September 27, 2012 Really nice images, everyone! I have been poking at the idea of getting an Elmar 50; perhaps it is time to cease poking and commence buying.  I don't think you'll regret it. Interestingly as I understand this was not originally sold as a low price 50mm, bought out for a special then sold alongside the Summicron at a very similar price for a while, before dropping. Production volumes are relatively low as well as I understand (Wiki supports)
chris_tribble Posted September 27, 2012 Author Share #54 Â Posted September 27, 2012 Seconded - I was travelling in Mexico recently and the 50 Elmar + 35 Cron made a near perfect light trekking set. See: Tepoztlan - a set on Flickr where a good percentage of the shots were made with this combination (a few with the 90 APO Cron which was lens #3 for most of this trip). stephen.w Posted October 4, 2012 Share #55 Â Posted October 4, 2012 I've also had it in mind to get one of these for some time now. Â A reputable Leica dealer has a near mint example in black for sale. In the photos, the aperture stops appear on the underside of the lens. Would this be due to normal movement of the collapsable barrel or is something wrong with it?
lct Posted October 4, 2012 Share #56 Â Posted October 4, 2012 It's just that the barrel you've seen was not in the right position.
chris_tribble Posted October 4, 2012 Author Share #57 Â Posted October 4, 2012 It's just that the barrel you've seen was not in the right position. Â Correct - you can rotate the lens and withdraw so that the white dot aligns at all sorts of strange places. Once you've got used to it you'll find that it's straightforward to rotate and align correctly. Nothing wrong with the lens you've seen.

algrove Posted December 26, 2013 Share #59 Â Posted December 26, 2013 You guys are all so bad. So I got one in black with 6 bit coding with case and manual. Been mostly laid up, but will be using it soon. Can't wait. Wonder how it performs on the MM?
jaapv Posted December 26, 2013 Share #60 Â Posted December 26, 2013 Very well. I like it because it fits into idea of putting as few layers of glass between the subject and the sensor. It shows.
