Leica M9-P ????

Leica cannot make a standard M8/9 without some kind of dot - there is a triangular hole behind that dot to access the vertical RF adjustment.

How do they do it with the MP?

Thanks and best,

Michael

Apparently there will be a different top plate in the upgraded M9 to accommodate the built-in visoflex with a novel mechanical information sharing "cam" system for real-time operation of lens systems: those lenses will carry the "R" designation and a hefty premium....

Oh btw.

Why not different top plate for M9 also?
The ecomnomics. The top plate for the MP is for a separate series of cameras as a whole,i.e MP and a-la-carte so there are a number being made. To make just a few for the M9, which is a plate that is unique for the camera type would be economically not doable for an acceptable price. If for instance the M10 has a different system that does not need this hole that would be a completely different case.

In an age of numerically controlled machines, eliminating the hollow for the red dot badge and the triangular hole for the RF adjustment would be a simple change to the software, I suspect – the removal of some existing code. The only new code required would be for the drilling and threading of the new RF-adjustment hole.

Best regards,

Doug

I'm not quite sure about the production process, but I seem to recall that the hole is already present in the original cast, so before the milling and drilling takes place.

they would have to set up a special one-off milling and casting process for the top plate. It would probably drive the pricepoint beyond the M9Ti.

Why would it be a one-off? The M9-P (which seems to be a done deal by now - I'm not why all the speculation) sounds as if it will be a regular production model sold alongside the bog standard M9. Leica already obtain top plates in at least five variants - standard M7, standard MP, MP with angled rewind crank, M7 with rewind knob, and M9 - another variant for the M9 is hardly going to be a big deal.

Why would it be a one-off?
Because the discussion was whether the camera Seal was depicted with was a one-off a-la-carte M9. What a future M9P, M9-2 or whatever will look like is anybodies guess and was not the subject..

if you look at the m9 disguised as a m8 it has no dot, just a screw similar to an mp. not a hard thing to change in a cnc mill.

Maybe that indicates that the original design idea of the M9 was without dot and changed for the final production item. It would not be a very good idea to have it wholly without access. A shifted vertical RF alignment is not uncommon if a camera is dropped.

I think you are making far too much out of nothing regarding the top plate.

I agree entirely - I mean, why is nobody talking about that shutter release button?!

Frankly, I couldn't care less. I didn't move from M4 to M4--2 or M4-P,nor from M6 to M6TTL or further to M7, I didn't move from M8 to M8.2. Minor upgrades are no buying trigger for me, nor the number of scratches on my current camera ;)
