The R solution - more details

Thanks John, I've bought the APO 2.0 - the 180 is a ROM lens so late model. The others are earlier 3 cam lenses.

OK! 180 Summicron rather than 180 Elmarit then. My instruction booklet for the 2x APO Extender says that it can be used with the 180/2, to give a 360/4. But I don't know the answer with regard to the 1.4 Extender.

Good lens choices ... even the old 100mm Macro Elmar R is a superb lens ... I think James Lager used it for many off the illustrations in his books.

Thanks Dunk; the 80mm Summilux dates from 1980, the 100mm is the Elmarit from 1995 and has the Elpro attachment. Think the 180mm is much more recent being ROM'd. Not sure about the 60mm macro, it was cheap-ish so worth a punt.

Whoops, not not the huge 180 Summicron! I meant to say I've bought the APO 2x Extender. No, I just have the lowly APO Elmarit but it's a late ROM lens.

I have the Nikon 200/2 and it's a huge bulky lens, ridiculous to tote around.

The 180/2 summicron is my favourite R lens. Yes, it's very big and extremely heavy. But as a concert photography lens, it is without peer. Just truly fabulous image quality. It balances really well on a R9/DMR and focus is easy with your thumb, whilst cradling the lens in your hand.

Takes all R lenses M lenses. There could soon be adaptors for any other rare and old favorites. You can see what is in focus. The chip is very sensitive far more than any film. The view is bright even in gloomy conditions. There is M class shutter response. NO mirror slap or VR wobbles. No excuses now - well maybe subject failure:)

Ah, that's clear now. But there's absolutely nothing lowly about the 180 APO Elmarit; you'll find it's a superb lens in every way! To serve my long lens needs, I've got it, as well as the legendary 280/4, and the 2x APO Extender, and I don't think I'll ever let any of them go.

... can the 180mm lens be used with the APO Extender R?

Depends. An early 180mm APO-Elmarit-R cannot be used with the 1.4x APO extender unless the lens has been modified (not cheap). Presence of the ROM contacts does not mean it's a later lens. A late lens or a modified early one can be used with 1.4x or 2x APO extenders.

I expect you will be pleasantly surprised.

To those that aren't happy with this 'solution', well, I think it's time to let go any hope that there will be any other option from Leica for our R glass. This will work, and more than likely any DSLR Leica would have built for R glass would have been much more money.

It may not be ideal, but it is a camera that can use two lens lines. It is as close to a "Bridge Camera' that I and some others had been asking for, is acceptable for me. Too, I was hoping for a bit more in terms of the a bigger/upgraded eyepiece and they've done that - albeit differently - with the EVF. This will work as well and theyalso gave an auxillary grip - I would have liked it to be a bit taller with a release and room for extra cards, but it's fine....etc. This a completely redesigned camera and they've addressed most of what many have wanted. So, I'll probably end up with one and use my specifically selected legacy R glass and my M lenses and move forward.

...it is a camera that can use two lens lines. ....

Well four lens lines actually if you include screwmount lenses and use a 14167 and R adaptor to mount Visoflex lenses. I'll hazard a guess that it will accommodate more legacy lenses than any other camera past or present.

It can also use Pentax thread and K, Contax/Yashica, Olympus OM, Canon FD/FL, Minolta MD/MC, Sony/Minolta A and Nikon (including G) lenses. Novoflex sells adapters for all these.

Including the Olympus 24mm & 35mm, Leica R 28mm & 35mm shift lenses :). Hopefully the micro lenses will be able to cope since the camera will work with the WATE.

I am guessing that the firmware can't handle the fact that a TC is added to the mix with various lenses.

I hope that a lack of a code for some of my R-lenses doesn't impact IQ. I guess time will tell once we get our hands on the new body.

I'm expecintg a TC will be fine. It appears that any firmware corrections applied for R lenses are minimal and that R lenses outside the 20 selected lenses shuold work fine, especially the long lenses.

Don't know about T/S but it will be interesting to try.

Mooky, I do agree, this is the only R solution there is ever likely to be. I think it will give a shot in the arm for R glass too, there is only so much of it out there.

The New M " 'R' Solution" is still probably months away but within these fora, discussion is as if it's just around the corner!

So far:

The prototype camera in the Stefan Daniel interview does not have a card slot - the SD card has been 'glued in'.

We have not seen ANY images made with the camera and looks as if no cameras have been made available for testing by the usual Leica aficionados .

There is no RAW support yet available.

We do not know exactly how R lens diaphragms will operate with the proposed adaptor. Will they require stop-down metering? If so how bright will the EVF and LV images be?

ETA is estimated as being early 2013 which is at least 4 or 5 months away ... but from what we know so far there is still a lot of work and development required.

I am excited by the prospect of using my R lenses on the new camera but remain realistic about its availability ... it will likely take more than a few months to reach the production stage.
