spydrxx Posted October 22, 2018 Share #1101 Posted October 22, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) Recently got a good deal on an almost mint Tower 45/46 - which is a rebranded Nicca 5L.. Everything seems to work fine, shutter curtains show almost no signs of wear and speeds seem right, both by sound as well as the results of my first roll of film. The rangefinder & viewfinder are both crystal clear, and only 1 rub mark on the rear. Although it seems quiet and smooth enough, given its age, I'll probably have it CLA'd just to ensure the lubricants last for the remainder of my lifetime. I do like the film advance lever and flip up door on the rear of an LTM body. It is only slightly higher than my iif which works fine for me as well. Welcome, dear visitor! Kleinkamera Posted November 22, 2018 Share #1109 Posted November 22, 2018 Greetings, I have a couple of IIIb cameras, pictured here. The earlier one (1938) is an export model (as I understand they all were, initially), the later one (1939/40) apparently a home market item. Other than the bottom plates they are identical. Unfortunately, the later body had been recovered before I acquired it but I think it looks ok and it's just back from service with Don (DAG) so it operates very smoothly. One question: according to Laney in his Collector's Guide, there were two versions of the IIIb with slightly different rangefinder covers. But he shows no examples of the "other" version. Do any of you have an example of the different top plate? Just curious how it differed. Thanks, James Welcome, dear visitor! Kleinkamera Posted November 23, 2018 Share #1111 Posted November 23, 2018 The straps are Gordy's and I do like them a lot. I also have one of their tripod mount wrist straps (uses the tripod thread on the bottom plate) for use with a II/D but I never really got along with that one. The piece around the viewfinder window changed from a stepped item to a rectangular item. This is clearly illustrated in the photo below where the two cameras on the left have the stepped item and the one on the right has the rectangular item. There was, of course, a lot of overlap (common in Leica production from the 1930s). The camera in the middle is a IIIb, whereas the 'newest' camera on the right is a IIIa. The camera on the left is an early III with bright chrome which is difficult to discern in this lighting, but is immediately obvious when the camera is seen or handled. Welcome, dear visitor! Kleinkamera Posted November 27, 2018 Share #1114 Posted November 27, 2018 Inspired by some recent posts in this thread I went out for a bit of shooting today with my Visoflex arrangement. IIIb, Visoflex IIa, OTZFO, OTSRO, Hektor 135 f/4.5 lens unit (1936), FIKUS. I also have a Bellows I/Visoflex I/PEGOO kit but the Viso is for M attachment and I no longer have any M bodies. I need to find a screwmount Visoflex I to swap out, I suppose. James Welcome, dear visitor! Kleinkamera Posted December 7, 2018 Share #1116 Posted December 7, 2018 This excellent condition 1932 Leica II (No 1006xx) arrived at my home today. Seen here with a 1932 nickel Elmar which came to me on a different, slightly earlier numbered Model II. James Welcome, dear visitor! oldwino Posted January 4, 2019 Share #1118 Posted January 4, 2019 Newest member of the family... 1930 Leica I converted to a II at one point. Its got the diopter adjustment, so I assume it was a little later than 1930! Love the look of black paint and nickel! Shutter a bit sticky art 1/20. Rangefinder a bit dim (but usable if you concentrate really hard!). Lens is hazy and stiff. All are off for a CLA. Looking forward to getting her back into tip-top shape! Welcome, dear visitor! wlaidlaw Posted January 4, 2019 Share #1119 Posted January 4, 2019 A lot of folk (including my father) believed the adjustable control for the rangefinder was a diopter control. What it actually is, is a focus control, hence why it has an infinity marker on it. In reality it can to some extent act as a diopter adjustment. Pyrogallol Posted January 5, 2019 Share #1120 Posted January 5, 2019 I have a Leica 11 with the eyesight adjuster added. I call it my Leica two and a half. it was originally a Standard. In the English price list of 1935 the conversion is described as “fitting focussing eyelens to range finder of Leica Model 11, £1-7-0” I suppose “eyelens” might be an odd translation from the original German?
