A dual-range Summicron on an M3 is hard to beat, even today.

The original mechanical perfection. IMHO of course.

Combo that I must use more 😕.

M3 with Summilux 50mm so nice balance, breeze fast focus (long or short throw) and not VF hiding that much

with vented screw-in hood

A few months ago I joined the M3 club! This came from an estate where there was a large collection of cameras. It needed a thorough service: the second curtain had a pinhole, the rangefinder patch was dim, and there is the start of some separation in the viewfinder. But amazingly, the double stroke was still very smooth and most shutter speeds sounded fairly accurate.

Camera came with the Summarit (parts only lens), the OTZNO attachment, case, and a Leicameter MR-4. Unfortunately, it's got some nasty meter rash on the top plate: otherwise this camera would be in better condition than normal! The strap lugs look like they never had a split ring through them.

It also had this neat tag on the back of it:

Adds to the history and charm of this M3. Currently it's at Youxin Ye's place and I expect it to finally come back for its first roll in July. Can't wait to throw my Summicron onto it and view 50mm in full view!

Dear 105012, why do you refer to the Summicron as a type 2a.  I inherited my father's 1958 M3 with the same Summicron and other lenses and have understood the SOOIC Summicron f = 5cm 1:2 to be simply referred to as type 2.  See Erwin Puts.  Kind regards, Hektor

It is my own nomenclature, to separate it from the version of the Type 2 (Type 2b) with redesigned body (dual scale markings, slight coating changes). My preference is for the Type 2a, mainly because I like the single scale and focus distance marks, which have forever disappeared on newer lenses...

Understood.  My doppel-schnecke Summicron is from the sixties with the later changes to which you refer. Thank-you.  I too prefer the earlier lenses as using the depth of field scale is more precise and which is my preferred method of focusing.

After being dropped off on March 14th, my M3 DS came back from a CLA! The second curtain was replaced, and a CLA was done. The shutter is nearly silent now.  The rangefinder patch was nearly unusable, with the double image being seen only in the brightest of lights. After a simple clean, it's super bright and dead on accurate.

Time to use it with one of my absolute favorite 50s, the wonderful LTM Nikkor 5cm 1.4. First time finally using the M3!

Great lens.  Better than the Summarit.

I wonder if there  was an LTM version of the f 2.0 nikkor--a much better lens in my opinion.

It is a good lens on both digital and film. I had used mine on digital exclusively for a couple of years, but when I initially tried it on film, focus was way off. Sent it to DAG and he found a shim missing. Now all is fine and I'm having fun with it on both digital and film.
