Mark, the sweet spot of the Summicron 1:2 / 50 is f/4-f/5.6….

…contrast is not as high as more modern lenses...

Yes, I agree. I’ve found it to perform remarkably well. I really like the more subdued colouring and contrast. A change from my latest Leica uber-Lenses.

I used Nikons from 1989 till 2010. I always said they’d double as a mace if attacked in a dark alley…

The Nikonos V is the toughest camera I've ever used.  It makes the F2 seem like its made out of a wet paper bag.

I’ve owned a number of Ms but always with the 0.72 finder. Thinking I might commit to shooting with just a 50 for a while, I thought I’d pick up an M3.

The M3 vf makes me want to shoot nothing but a 50 ever again. Going back to a 0.72 finder almost seems a hardship!

Agreed, I even bought a 1.4x magnifier to try and bring my MP up to a similar magnification of my M3 for when I'm shooting it with the 50mm, but it wasn't anywhere near the same. The M3 viewfinder is just so unique.

I doubled down on the M3, sold my old one and picked up a completely reworked Kanto black-paint double stroke. I plan to keep this one for life and hopefully hand it down to one of the kids, it should brass nicely over time. I keep in on the kitchen counter and pick it up to shoot the kids every time they're doing something interesting around the house so it should hold good memories for them.

Steve, the 0.85 viewfinder in my M7 a la carte is pretty good, but I must admit, not as good as an M3.  One of the attractions of the M2 and M3 is having an only 3 frame viewfinder.

Interesting. I had been thinking that perhaps a 0.85 M7 is what I really need if I like the M3, but it would be a big outlay for a not quite as good finder and aperture priority!

Disappointingly my Leica M3 days are over - but I have now discovered 120 - 6x9cm B&W film 8 exsposures 1930’s Bessa folding camera - all I have too now is use this wonderful vintage tech!   {just out interest it came with original brown leather case/strap and the ORIGINAL INSTRUCTION BOOK !!!}.  Well looked after by previous owner !!!

still an M3 fan.

My 1956 DS M3 with collapsible 50/2. I use this for taking pictures of strangers in public places. It's user grade as you can tell from the dents and scuff marks. I use a collapsible lens so that the whole thing fits into a small bag.

Sometimes my '56 DS M3 looks like this. Without prompting I've been told by a teenager that it's a nice camera. I blame King Kong Skull Island for that but there's also a bit of Steam Punk to it. I've also been asked if it's a Leica.

My eye sight is not so good for 35mm, so a 6x9cm monochrome negative helps, my Leitz Wetzlar Focomat IIc is deigned for Negs up too  6x9cm. Plus the enlarger is now updated with the Heiland electronic GmbH LED Cold Light Source optimised for Ilford Multigrade Warmtone FB Papers.

Started with Leica M in 1976 with an M4 and a year later later added an M2. I never had the M3 until now. Now I got a 1961 copy in very good shape. I love the clean 0.92x viewfinder as 50mm is my main focal length. Taken with M10M and 50mm Summicron DR.

Same m3 but my 90mm Thambar came back from servicing.

It is such a nice match. Had lot of fun this week end. No idea what the results will look like though 😁

The lovely CV 50mm 2.5 just goes so well with it.
