No more guessers?

It's a 1928 Isotta Fraschini 8AS.

Who's next?

RS60 (I had to look in a book, so I feel that I have cheated :o).

I think the victory goes to Mr Thompson, who described what it turned into, rather than what is depicted, but without his clue I would not have got the answer.

1959 RSK. One of 4 customer cars built to be convertible between center (or centre if you prefer!) seat for F2 or LHD for sports car racing.

Over to you Mr. Thompson!

This is going to be tough! The gills make me think Maserati but the exhaust looks like American V8. RHD, alloy body Italian hood latches... Maybe a Maserati 300 with an American V8?

Dreadful welding! The over-sized windscreen makes me think this has run at Le Mans where the "authorities" were fond of trying to stop "foreign cars" winning the Index of Thermal Efficiency by introducing daft rules.

Is there enough room for a V8 in there?

You're correct, Kent, It's a Maserati, but which model? You're correct about the hood latches and they later appeared on a more famous and successful model.

Pete, there's no V8 but probably enough room for one. (I knew a guy who shoe horned a Cadillac into a Mini, so anything is possible) :) The car seems to be undergoing restoration to original, hence the rough look. I don't think the displacement of this car would place it in the Thermal Efficiency class which was, as I remember, usually won by Panhard and Lotus.

This car is ex Moss, Behra, Taruffi & Villoresi with a rich history.

So the question is, which model? Extra points for giving the serial number. No, I'm not joking as the information is readily available and just a few keystrokes away. Happy sleuthing, guys.

200SI #2401. Feels like cheating to look this stuff up on the internet! The pipes looked wrong for a 300 (6 cyl) and if not a V8 then not a 450. Too late a style for an A6GCS but it had to be a "four"... Sweet car, I hope it doesn't get the typical US style over-restoration. Yeah, I recognized the hood latches from Birdcages which I go back far enough to have seen race in period.

Correct, Kent, this is indeed the prototype 1955 200SI #2401, and I don't consider it cheating to use the internet to research. After all, we are on the internet as we "speak." I agree with you about over restoration. Somebody with deep pockets buys something like this and they make it into a show car, where in actuality, the builders cared very little for cosmetic perfection, especially the Italians as these were merely tools to be used (and abused) to win races. Good observation on those hood latches, too.

Here's another view then it's back to you for another photo.

I love racers from the '50s and '60s! I'm on my way out of town (again!) but if I'm not completely dead tomorrow night I'll post something. The Ault Park concourse is on in a couple of weeks so I can replenish my stock of photos for this thread.

Okay, this should be too easy but you'll need to be precise. Use the internet all you like. No, I don't need chassis numbers!
