Nigel, I cannot remember the actual year of the car illustrated, but certainly a Cord 812 of the mid to late thirties.  Interesting design, but not much fun to drive.  Not a "trailer queen'; here it is competing at Kalorama (Victoria) in 1976

Hi Stuart

Yes - been sorting things out here as I had planned a quick trip....Fortunately my wife has managed to get approval from her employer to leave the US and has a seat on a flight from JFK this evening. We figured it was better to both be stranded here where we have more options that her being stuck in Manhattan with everything shut and nowhere to easily go outside the city.

If someone could post something that would be great as I have no photo library here. Hopefully I can find something interesting in the next week or so as we'll be at our place in the Cotswolds which is a bit of a Classic car hub....

Let's try this one. I've chosen to post 'clue photos' in black & white because color images would be a dead give-away to the identity of this mystery car........ if you recognize it right off the

bat, please don't just blurt it out.

Yes, Andreas, I suppose it could be classified as being  ORANGE.

Wilson, pursuing the 'diesel' concept would be helpful in the correct identification - and the location of the door handles is a major clue..

motard - German product yes, east - definitely not.

Another hint - re the 'handmade' look; it is not a kit car that was ever offered to the public to assemble and finish.

My first idea was Mercedes C111 and as you confirmed the color I think it maybe is, as the diesel fits and I also found a version with a very similar looking door-handle (although the condition is a little bit irritating, so it also could be a car that tries to copy a C111).

C 111 is correct. Mercedes-Benx brought this one over from their museum for the Pebble Beach Concours a few years back. I spoke withy Michael Bock, who at that time was the curator and chief of the M-B  Classic division, responsible for the care and maintanance of all the historic M-Bs and said that the C11 is one of the most requested artifact in their museum. He also mentioned that very few people realize how many of todays M-B advances were first incorporated and tried in the various versions of the C 111, most prominently their multi-link rear suspension. Steel chassis / frame with fiberglass body construction, and still fully functional in every respect, he made no apologies for the 'kit car' quality of the thing..............it had a job to do for several years, that of a research mule for multiple technologies including setting speed records...........and fulfilled them all extremely well. The company never had firm plans to produce it and sell it, but if they would have built a production model, he assured me that it would have been up to the usual M-B build standards. All in all, very enlightening and interesting.

Thanks fopr playing, you're next, a.j.z.

Dear JZG, a few more of your excellent photos of the CIII would be appreciated.  In 1970 I took shots of it here in Melbourne with its original rotary motor.
